The mix of new roof, new soffits and facia, and a whole slew of trips to the hospital for my kids (they are normally healthy, just migraines for one and stomach spasms for the other) kind of brought our saving down to a low level we do not like.
we have one credit card, but it is paid off in full each month. the only debt we have is one car note and a mortgage.
our rule (except for car and house) is if you cannot buy it cash, then you do not get it until you can.
this rule sucks when you want something as bad as I want a DSLR, but the peace of mind knowing that if my car exploded, I could buy another one without money worries. So yes, though we could buy the camera now, it is an unNEEDED expense. the hospital bills will be paid off at Christmas. then we will get the camera.
as bad as I want the camera, waiting is the smartest move fiscally speaking, plus I will enjoy it that much more once I get it, and do not have financial woes over my head.
