Kickstarter 'survival belt'
on: August 06, 2014, 02:30:16 AM
What do people think of this?

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/manliestbelt/carry-less-adventure-more-survival-belt

Kind of tempted to kickstart it, as even excluding the gadgets the belt itself does look rather nifty; plus even though the multitool looks really small, you can never have enough backups and firestarters!

I’m not sure I’m convinced they went with the right advertising option for their video though – personally the idea of using my belt to drag a boat around doesn’t appeal as I like to keep my trousers up/multitools on my belt, so I’d rather they focused on whether it’s a good belt first, but it does at least show how versatile it can be in a pinch I suppose.

I think it may be funny when a friend ask me whether I have a bottle opener, and I start taking off my pants belt.  :D

Seriously, an interesting concept, of a few tools featured, I like the GPS chip the most and I wonder how long is the battery life.  And if the belt is replaced by a paracord belt and has a replaceable ferro rod/whistle/light at the buckle, it'd be more useful in real survival situation.

They say 3 months  of battery life on 4 AAA batteries:

I'm not wild about this.. Though I do like the basic design of the belt, the multitool seems a bit.. meh :P And a bottle opener for which you need to take off the belt doesn't seem that useful, either.

Like I said, I do like the look of the belt, though, just as the basic item, without considering it's use as a survival thing, and the buckle system seems quite clever.

They say 3 months  of battery life on 4 AAA batteries:
But where are those 4 AAA batteries?

Also you don't get much. They seem to have a pretty heavy overhead:
60k: you get a belt with a fire starter
+290k: you also get a small one piece MT, I mean a tiny, almost worthless piece of MT
+400k: you get a tiny GPS transmitter that requires 4 AAA batteries

Quote
Our iron-clad design priorities for this project are very straightforward:
Simplicity    >   Durability   >   Made in U.S.   >   Style   >    Features
Features are not on their priority list, functionality didn't even make it into the priority list (thats why they have that bottle opener). Every designer knows that the dogma is supposed to be "Form Follows Function", not the other way round.

Also for that kind of money, I expect more information. What exactly is that belt made of? etc?

seriously?
buy a money belt, put firestarter and one-piece MT in there... then at least you can get leather :P

Yeah...Gerber has a survival belt dirt cheap already out there.

Anything that requires me to take off my belt is not convenient. Besides, who wants to use one while the chips are down...and so are you pants.

But what about the belt's primary function while you lug around fire wood with it?  ::)

My belt only comes off to take off my pants. I NEED it to hold up those pants!!

And that knife looks like an easy way to accidentally get cut while adjusting the belt.

Noooooooooooooooooooo way!!!! :td:

Maybe they could design a belt pouch, where you could store the belt. So you would have a belt pouch on your belt containing a SURVIVAL belt. It would be a win win, you don't have to take off your belt to use the survival belt

Exactly my next question...  It looks pretty slim to be hosting 4AAA battery.  Or does it mean AAAA battery?

Nope, they repeated that in the Q&A, however they do not specify where those batteries are.

I have a few of their recent model belts. My oldest one is about 6months old. The buckles seem to be we'll built and the finish is holding up well. The slide/ratchet fastening mechanism is really great - the adjustability is much finer grained over any others leather belt. The kick starter is a neat idea, but I won't be buying in. Not gonna take my belt off to open a bottle. GPS is a neat idea, but that market will be somewhat limited in my view.

The belts look ok. Dont see the need for a bottle opener, gps or knife in the buckle though.

How about we all nag Metro to apply his Skinth-i-ness to making belts. Think Batman's unitility belt. Pouches, pockets, and straps all the way around.

Yeah, the actual survival part is pretty gimmicky (although an extra firestarter is never bad), i just liked the slidebelt itself. Sadly you can only buy those from the US and UK shipping costs are outrageous! A black leather slidebelt is $58 and there's a coupon for free US shipping, whereas shipping to the UK is an extra $24 :(
