Hobo knife
on: July 31, 2014, 08:43:45 PM

I ordered this Aitor Gran Gourmet while I had a few beers.
I mistakenly ordered the green version, thinking it was black, and I also mistakenly ordered a spoonless version. Not sure I want to keep it, Thinking about returning it. On the other side, the tool is a beast, made to last. And I do have an EatnTool incoming anyway that I can use as spoon (Thanks Def).
Anyone else has an Aitor SAK clone? Or a good hobo tool?

That looks like a nice one. Bummer about the spoon though.

Here is a link to the ones I have.

I do have an Aitor 'SAK clone':

I think it is an interesting piece to collect, but in terms of using, some part of the tool functions a little less than desirable.  :)

Nice collection Chako!
On the missing spoon, I got in touch with the vendor, seems he has a new batch, and they have ditched the spoon on it? I decided to keep it anyway.

I've always liked the look of the Aitor "Green" series.
Although not really a hobo knife I've been tempted to go for this set.

Using this thingie:
It's actually darned good, locks easily, cuts nice, easy to eat with, easy to clean, rustproof, easy to hold, light to carry.

Before I had another Chinese one with plastic scales, awl and corkscrew a few months ago (see below). That was atrocious: after 1 month, the scales fell off, it was full of rust, bits of food were stuck everywhere, the awl was impossible to pull apart and the spoon was a huge bent mess (you could see it was a normal spoon they bent to fit in the tool...

I used the Aitor to eat my dinner, under weird looks from my wife.  :D
The straight fork is good for spearing food, but not that great to be used as a shovel. A curved fork is way better. Lucky there was no rice on the menu. I would have struggled. Maybe I will look into the set on this thread with a curved small fork next. I am not saying it was a bad experience using the knife. I think such combo tools serve a purpose for when no table cutlery is available, and you don't want to eat with your hands.

I'd rather bring a pair of chopsticks. OK, collapsible chopsticks, since this is MT.o. Chopsticks are pretty good multitools in their own right.

I've considered a Case hobo (http://www.wrcase.com/sidesearch/index.php?q=hobo&Submit=Search) from time to time, but (1) it seems I can always find something I want more for the money, and (2) I'm a bit dubious about the utility of hobo knives in general, as it seems like they would be a royal PITA to clean and they generally are not lighter than packing along a regular set of utensils, anyway.

I just found my old hobo knife. It's got a lot of rust I need to lean off but I used the heck out of it when I was in the scouts.
