Opening a can of food with a knife

Have seen anyone can a can with a pocket knife in a long while. My grandfather use to open cans with his Case Stockman.

What kind of enabling is that? I say use what you carry.

Yeah... unfortunately, I don't ever carry folding knives. I carry MTs. Currently a Wave, which conveniently comes with a can opener.

This whole thing is just an experiment on my part.

But I get what you're saying. What's the point of getting a high quality blade just to baby it when you NEED a high quality blade?

Unfortunately, in the realm of knives, I don't have any of what most people would call a high quality blade.

Does that method work with various blades about the same, or are there factors that you feel make it work better? Thinner blade? Sharper blade? Any particular angle? Any particular cans?

I get why you do it and think its great.

I just found Charko's post humorous because generally we recommend sharp knives which can also mean more expensive ones. I'm not a steel, price or brand snob, cheap knives are fine. I do understand using a beater to save wear and do that myself. However I don't hesitate in using what is with me when needed.

Regarding the higher quality blades. IMO hardly anybody needs one. Most though could do with better skills.

Of your knives I would go with the Walmart, Sheffield and Wave type blades. It is technique, not force.
