Any love for the Executive?
on: August 12, 2014, 07:21:27 PM
Hi fellows!

I dug out an old and steady companion of my personal tool set I use to carry in my Altoids tin for EDC. It contains some pills (for several events ;) ) and some safety pins, wound plasts, a pencil etc etc and a little Victorinox Executive (0.6603) as well.

So it´s one of my "real" EDC items. I like the scissors and the reason it has two blades and a file. The orange peeler is a strange tool to me, but it´s good in opening boxes and envelopes.

It seems to be a little forgotten in general. I see not really much of them in pockets of fellows in the knife forums. As well as the whole 74 mm series seem to be an underdog in Vics setup.

IMO these tools carry perfectly in summer when it´s hot an everyone is sweating.

What about you? Do like 'em or is it just me; maybe just some nostalgic view in fear of seeing more and more great tools disappear from the lineup and the market...

I´m looking forward hearing your opinions.

I had one many years ago and loved the orange peeler...used it all the time!

Great little knife but I'm unsure if I have one or not....I will have to look. The orig went in the big fire.

Much, much love for the Executive here. It is in my Top 3 factory SAKs of all time, along with the Vic Rambler and Wenger Traveler.

It's just perfect for summer carry, for going out or dressy occasions. I love my 74mm Director and Windsor too, but it's the Executive that gets carried the most.

My Executive is the one tool/knife I ALWAYS have on me.  It's lived on my keys for years now. :tu:

Yet i have none of these. But probably one day...

Could someone show some comparison pictures of 58, 74 and 91 blades and scissors? I would love to see some referance.

They are definitely liked, their not as popular due to (guessing) marketing and retailers wanting obvious distinction between small SAKs (58mm) and larger ones. (91mm)
Guess it may be a bigger is better mind frame, since a 74 can cost as much as a 91.

I like the 74mm lineup, I consider them gentleman's knives.
I acquired a black Executive in a lot a year or so back, I liked it but never carried it other than to show it off for a few days.

If they add Sig. Lite scales to the 74mm lineup, we can talk about replacing the 58 on my keys. Seem to use the pen and LED more than any other tool these days.

I love them, but not a regular carry for me, however, as said before, it is perfect for those "Gentleman" environments.

this pic was taken a long time ago, but the thread needed some pics

I'm going to buck the trend and say I'm not a fan.  :-\

The 74mm line for me is too big for the keys, and too small for the pocket. I have a Director (same tool, different scales) on my desk at home, but it rarely gets used. In fact the only time it gets used is when I decide I'll use it out of principle (because I bought it and I'm not getting my moneys worth from it's service) and to try and make friends with it, but I always seem to come to the same conclusions. The 74mm line for me is lost in a kind of nowhere zone between key carry and pocket carry.

The biggest I'll have on keys and such, is a Wenger Evo 88/Pocket Tool Chest, but I want something larger for the pocket - something I'd feel comfortable eating an apple with. I know I could use an Exec for that, but I wouldn't feel comfortable using it for a task of that size if that makes sense - just a personal perception thing. Yet despite all that I still don't want to part with it. I keep thinking that one day I'll grow to love it, or I'll end up in circumstances where the Director will be ideal carry. For example, if I couldn't pocket carry my usual knives for any reason - the Director might be a nice tool to pop into a wallet. Till then though, it's sat well out of circulation

Love the Executive, one of the key parts in my "new"-style EDC.

There's really only one thing I'd change on it: Add the pen-scales like the Manager has, and it'd be perfect urban carry, I recon  :tu:

I concur with 50ft-trad on this one, and pretty much for the same reasons.  I have an Executive, but it gets used very rarely.  I also gave one to my father at one point, but he doesn't carry it either (he EDCs a minichamp).

My Executive currently resides in my "treasure box" on my dresser with my first SAK (Recruit purchased in 1992) and all of my other manly trinkets.  It is in my treasure box instead of with the rest of my SAKs because of its small size and its uniqueness being the only SAK of that size I own.

I'm going to buck the trend and say I'm not a fan.

I'm one of those guys who never met a SAK or MT I didn't like, but for me the Executive does not really add much to the Classic SD in terms of functionality, but has the downside of being a little bigger in the pocket.  So I get where you are coming from.   The Executive does have a longer blade.  True dat.  But the orange peeler just does not float my boat, and I never cared for a secondary blade.  So what you have left after that is basically a Classic SD.

That being said, I don't dislike the Executive, and think its a sweet piece of SAK.  But for me its just not up there in the upper echelon of SAKs with the Classic SD and its siblings, nor the Compact, the Explorer Plus, etc. It might be one of the best SAKs ever if the orange peeler had a larger flat driver tip, and if it had a pen.  Basically a 74mm Compact.  Rock on.

I will say in it's defense, that the driver on the orange peeler is great for eyeglasses, and both the nail file and scissors are very good indeed. Just noticed the tang on mine is stamped Hoffritz on the reverse to the Vic stamps

Collecting is way different to active service though (even I don't want to part with the one I don't carry) ;) Do any of them make it to the pocket?

The Executive was my first SAK, but I rarely carry it at this point.  I do like it, but it just doesn't really fit in with my carry lineups.  It's a good one for just sitting around home or for light carry.  I find it a little blade heavy for a small SAK though.  I don't see a need for two blades on one that small, plus the orange peeler has the little serrated blade as well.  I do like the size of the scissors though compared to the 58mm version.

I want to like it, but in that rough size range (that is, when I want a blade longer than a 58mm, but don't want something bulky), I carry my Alox Bantam. Elegant, thin, indestructible. And I imagine I can get into an orange with it :)

I put my Executive next so some other 91mms today, for some visual size comparison and realised, that the shield / splintring position on the reverse side than on the 91 mms?

It makes the toothpick / tweezers being placed on the other side of the SAK. Quite interessting, imo.
