What is your favorite SAK?
on: June 24, 2008, 05:41:00 AM
So, what is your favorite SAK?

I honestly have tons of SAKs and I love them all. But, if I had to pick one, it would have to be the WorkChamp XL! It has a ton of tools, and a locking blade. IMO, it is the best SAK ever! I also have the WorkChamp. But, I like how the XL has a clip point blade in addition to the drop point. The hoof cleaner is a pretty cool implement as well. Oh, and the best part is the way I got it.. I traded him a Super Tool 200. He still thinks he ripped me off!  :P

How about you guys?

Favorite 91mm Cellidor for my briefcase/laptop bag:
Vic CyberTool41 or Vic Champ XLT

Favorite 91mm Cellidor for EDC:
Vic Deluxe Tinker (Has all the tools that I think are "basic": blade, scissors, pliers, flat screwdriver, Phillips screwdriver, can opener, bottle opener, awl)

Favorite Alox for EDC in conjunction with a Leatherman Micra or Squirt S4:
Vic Alox Cadet or Vic Alox Bantam

Favorite SAK for Nostalgia
 Vic Champion circa 1982

The WorkChamp XL would definitely be a prized part of anyone's collection.

I'd love to have a WorkChamp XL, like everyone else, but I have no idea whether it would wind up as a drawer queen or see regular use. I have only see one in a display case, and it looked fairly intimidating. Magnificent engineering though and nice large tools.

I only have 2 SAKs so far, that I got from FelineVet: a Vic Explorer and a Wenger Handyman. They are both really great models. The Wenger Handyman is particularly good for pocket carry because it is only 85mm. You wouldn't think it, but those 6mm seem to make all the difference.

On paper at least, I think my favourite SAK would be a Vic Ranger. For practical purposes though, it would be some version of the CyberTool since I work in computers. I haven't had much luck finding those models used and in my price range though...

After actually using SAKs for everyday tasks, however, I am starting to appreciate how versatile just the basic tools are. I was really surprised at how well the Vic bottle opener and Wenger nail file handled Philips heads, for example. So I am may well start going the minimalist route one day and check out a Super Tinker or maybe a Farmer.

Errr... I guess you just wanted one favourite SAK? At the moment, it is probably the CyberTool 41. It basically combines all the features of the Ranger with a bit driver and pliers, which would cover both my home and work worlds in one handy tool.

I have a few SAK's that I like.

My all time favorite is probably the Farmer.

I also really like the Esquire Money Clip.  I EDC'd one for quite a while clipped to my pocket and it was extremely handy.

My current favorite is a Wenger Patriot.  It's nice to have a small thin pocket knife for simple cutting tasks.

Vic Small Tinker without a doubt.

Has everything I really need, but has nothing I don't need in a package sufficiently compact and lightweight so that it's always with me.

EDC for over 20 years.

For the laptop bag:  Vic Cybertool Lite
In the car: Vic Rescue Tool
On the bike: Wenger Large Mountain Bike SAK
Travelling:  Vic Traveller Lite
Oldies:  Vic First Mate
EDC: Scibeer custom
sometimes paired with a Wenger Alinghi.

I have to ask what you use the hoof cleaner on the Workchamp XL for.

Give in, buy several Farmer's!!!!!!

There's no way that I could pick a favorite.

I suppose if I had to pick just one to have, it would be the Cybertool 41.  It has everything I would ever need in a SAK.

I carry all kinds of SAKs (OHT, CT41, Wenger SI, Farmer, Old Red Pioneer, etc.), but the SAK that is ALWAYS with me is a Rambler. I guess that makes it my "favourite"!

Wenger Standard Issue.

It has the basic tools I want in a size I like and the Alox isn't eaten up by insect repellant. I also like that it has a bail.

What do you mean by this? Insect repellent destroys cellidor SAKs?

Some insect repellants disolve some plastics. If I remember correctly it's Deet that does it. It can disolve the plastic in knife hadles, sleeping pads etc.

The only problem I've had was the finish on a nice Browning shotgun was eaten off with insect repellant, well that and I also got a bad burn on my butt when a bottle leaked in my pocket. The repellant I was using was military surplus back in the Vietnam war days.

I learned my lesson and took heed of the warnings in regards to insect repellant and plastic.

edit: to add that one of the guys I work with sprayed himself in the face with insect repellant while wearing safety glasses and the plastic lenses were pretty much instantly pock marked and blured when he tried to clean them. He had to learn the hard way too.  :D

Insect repellent with DEET can 'interact' with various types of plastic.

DEET somehow temporarily re-liquifies the plastic, allowing it to flow and then re-set in new and exciting shapes!

The higher the percentage of DEET in the product, the more prounouned that interaction will be.  I'm not sure if DEET interacts with Cellidor, but I don't really want to find out.  DEET does interact with some of the high-quality industrial-grade plastics used in outdoor gear.

After applying repellent, carefully wipe your hands before handling any plastic items.

As of right now, my favorite SAK is the Fieldmaster. However, this changes sometimes. I'm also awfully fond of the Farmer and also the Adventurer. I'd like to get a Trekker or a OHT with a plain edge. I think I'd like that even better than the Adventurer.

That is one of my favourites too. If you haven't already, you might want to try out a Wenger Handyman or Evo 18.

Basically the same toolset as the Fieldmaster but in 85mm, which I find a much better size for pocket carry.

I think the only difference is the Wenger swaps the small blade for a nail file (which also doubles very well as a Philips head).

How long ago did Vic buy Wenger?  I've heard anecdotal reports of Wenger's quality improving, but I've never heard specifically what is different now with Wenger.

I sort of go between by Vic Champion plus and the Wenger S557 depending on what I think I'll need.  Always be careful of DEET.  I kept a bottle of DEET in the same fanny pack pocket as a compass.  Needless to say I don't have to describe what it did to that plastic on the orienteering compass.

I would love it if Vic would start using Alox or wood on all their current cellidor models. I don't know why people are so happy to have plastic on knives that are otherwise of excellent quality. I thought most people associate plastics as being cheap compared to metal or "natural" materials?

Well cellidor is pretty hard wearing, plus it can come in a variety of sheeple friendly colours :), and besides I love alox sak's more for the robustness of the tool's inside rather than the scales :)

Plus the cellidor scales hold toothpicks, tweezers and on the PLUS handles also hold a pen and a pin.
