Cold steel bushman, very disappointed
on: June 25, 2008, 05:39:53 AM
So I take it fishing with me. Last time I tried to chop a small branch, maybe 2cm in diameter? It didn't work that great, but when I got home, I found the edge has folded from the four or five chops. Today there was an abandanded 500ml water bottle, so I filled it up and tried to chop it in half like in the blade show video David posted. Well the bottle went flying, in one piece. When I got home and checked the blade, the edge folded again!?  ??? Wood okay it's hard, but plastic watter bottle?

I'm pretty sure SK5 is close to 1080 steel, which should be a pretty decent cutting steel. But the result on CS bushman, it's disappointing.

Ouch!!! Well, what can i say... Have you try to convex the edge? Convex edge is stonger than the factory bevel (i suppose it still has the factory bevel), and i'm sure it will improve the chopping ability of your bushman.

I actually sharpened it at 40°, factory is near 30°, which make it even more disappointing to have rolled edge. I can try to convex but I don't know if I'm doing it the right way or not.

it's like they didn't even heat treat it at all! I remember hearing how tough they used to be, of all the abuse they
used to take, maybe they changed something.

That doesn't sound right at all.  :-\  Mine is the newer one and I have really abused it in the garden and have had no problems (except when I hit a large rock  :-\).
I'm back!!

Sorta.  :D  TBH, I have pretty much used it as my "abuse" knife, so I'm not too fussed about the odd nick here and there.  They are so cheap you don't have to worry about it.
I'm back!!

Not going to bother with warrenty return because postage would cost more than half the knife is worth, and if CS demands return postage it would cost more than the knife. I'll just stay away from CS from now I guess.

I'm with Mike here.

Everyone now and then has a bad one.  Don't write them off because of this one isolated incident.  I have a few CS knives and I am very impressed with them.
I'm back!!

Same here, minus the rock

Some run from breaks of ice, and answer none:
And some condemned for a fault alone." -William Shakespeare, King Lear (1608), Act IV, scene 6, line 169

Well I sent CS an email saying basically the same thing as first post, I'll see what they say, or if they'll bother to respond.

I like my Cold Steel knives... But, they don't back their products up by any means! How they didn't reply to jzmtl's email or how their warranty is only a year!!! I think Benchmade makes the best knives! Well, it's still a few steps back from my Bayley knife!  :D :D

Tough break mate, but I'd still be inclinde to send them a second, strongly worded email, before I gave up on it :)
