boardgames - your favourite?
on: August 23, 2014, 05:57:21 AM
Hi there,
beside knives I like playing with boardgames, I'd like to know your favourite and why.

I'll go first: I like 2-player games, so my two favourites are
- Magic: the gatherimg (I only play pauper so it's cheap but still awesome)
- Dragon Dice, I love dice, this game has so many of them, it's strategical and customizable, I love it

My g/f is a Filipina immigrant, w/English as her 3rd language. However, she's a flat-out TERROR for me in Scrabble. Between strategy, and what can only be described as her own, personal Scrabble-Angel, I simply cannot win. Without exaggeration, I have only won twice in what must be near 50-60 games.

I'm also a big fun of quick dice games, 10.000 being one of my favourite along with an Italian made game: Jordan.

I'll try to point you to the rules if I find them ince at the pc

right! scrabble is such a great game, I only have the dice version nowadays but it's so much fun nonetheless.

especially for kids it's such a training, their language skills will be improved.

We also have a game called "Bananagrams" (because it comes in a banana shaped pouch) which is like scrabble but without the points scoring aspect and does not have a board.  You have to place the tiles on a table/floor etc. until all your letters are gone, first one out of tiles is the winner.  It has similar linguistic challenges to scrabble but is more portable, so you can play it on a train, or take it on holiday etc. :)

Settlers of Catan is one of my three favorites, but the only one readily avaialble. I will not play it for money, I'm hard core enough as it is.

Avalon Hill's Civilization (not the Sid Meyer's drek) is by far one of my favorite games ever. But I don't have the money needed to buy a set when I find it. Merchants of Venus is back in print, but they've changed the map a little and screwed with the rules.

Nothing too major for me like Risk or Monopoly or any of those games that can go on for a long time.  I've always been a fan of Aggravation/Trouble as that was a big one my family played a lot when I was a kid.  I've got a newer version of it that my wife and older daughter occasionally play.  We have a lot of fun with it.  Another old school favorite my family played when I was a kid was Uncle Wiggly.  That could be a frustrating game at times.  Haven't played that in forever.

Monopoly

What's interesting is they have different localized street names and area, so if you are working oversea, it's a fun souvenir to bring home. :)

There's an iPhone adaptation of Risk called Lux Deluxe. It's really good.

You can get all sorts of maps for it too.

I like Yahtzee and Boggle but neither of those are really board games , I guess it would have to be Scrabble then.

I tend to like cooperative games:

  • Red November
  • Forbidden Island
  • Flash Point: Fire Rescue
  • Pandemic.

But I also like ‘gently’ competitive games like Carcassonne.

My favorite game to place with my nieces is "Sorry". I like how the game can change without notice making anyone the winner. :D

I like Monopoly but after playing it a couple weeks ago for the first time in ages, I realized how competitive it can get and how much it can drag on time wise once hotels start going up  :twak:.
I knew my wife was a keeper when she transitioned from calling it a knife thingy to a multi-tool.

Ok, I haven't had time to translate it yet, you can find the original (in italian) page here:

http://www.randin.it/ihggd/jordan/jordan.html

maybe google translate can help there.

I will try to find time for translating it, but I can't promise anything :))
