Tell me about straight razors please.

Following on from Ben's epic whinge http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,5417.0.html I've decided that the only right and green way for me to go about the business of shaving is to get a cut throat razor

I'm pretty handy with sharpening/stropping, but beyond that I'm a total razor novice

So any advice would be great

well...dont hurry,move the blade only sideways,dont slashs at all.ive been shavin my head for over 10 yrs with blade like that,and at the beginning there was some accidents that were dangerous to my ears;)

So what razor do you use

 i have two i boyght from barber stock,they have titanium handles and blades can be replaced.
and 5 old ones,from germany,austria,sweden.and one large with stainless handle&blade with wooden scales,i havent used that one,its more like bad boy item to put on the wall.and stainless is hard to sharp to barber specifications.
and then i have,at our summer cabin,some 8-9 un-used solingen bladed razors in their original package,i just sent one to "our" Benner.

those ex-wifes and ex girlfriends are a pain in the _ss,really rusty nails on coffins.been there-done that.
well...lets figure some fair thing so u can have it.just went thru drawers here at home,seems like i have here one very slightly used(or not at all maybe),solingen bladed strait razor too,with red(ish) amber scales,just needs some steel wool/polish and sharpening.

yep.and if i fan find it,i have a used russian made straitrazor sharpening stone,even has the originlan but really worn sheath.thats a bit risky one to send though,ts tough as glass and thin= fragile.

One bit of advice, don't shave with one if you have the hiccups.

Think I'll watch this thread and see what develops.

Don't know if I will do this all the time or just make it an occasional thing I believe my dad has a few I may try and bum 1 from him since he does use them

Well I did bum a straight razor from my dad and after cleaning it up and getting it shaving sharp, shaved with it for a week or so I guess got bored with it and have decided to go back to my regular shaving once a week or not at all

Nope just a little scratch when my little girl ran into me with her walker but I don't usually cut myself shaving anyway

It is a wonder I didn't cut my head off though Perhaps that is why Benner hasn't tried his yet
