Tinker Love
on: September 05, 2014, 08:14:42 PM

Am I alone in feeling so fond of my little Swiss Tinker, I love carrying it, I never feel like I'm under equipped it just seems to work so well.

I've added a pocket clip and now I'm even happier, as I don't have to worry so much about losing the little thing.

How much Tinker love is out there?

James

Lots of Tinker love here. I carry one all the time at home and a Deluxe Tinker when I'm out.
Just the Tinker at home because I have access to all my regular tools, but the Tinker in
my pocket is great if I just need to tighten a screw, open a box, etc.

I like these little rascals and their kissing cousins the Spartans.

I have a few more scattered about in hunting, hiking and fishing packs.

I'm a big fan of the Tinker.  One was my first SAK, and it still sees a lot of carry time despite being joined by many of its more lavishly equipped brothers.  It's my standard by which I judge other SAKs, and the model I've given to many others as their first SAK. :tu:

Lots of love for the Tinker here,I've more of them than any other type of SAK! Big,small, square Phillips, round Phillips with key slot...and I dare say there'll be more to come :gimme:

I am a big fan as well.  My preferred Tinker is the Tinker Small.  It has all the same tools in a more compact package.  It is probably my second favorite SAK right behind the Pioneer.

The Tinker line appeals to me in part because I am not a wine drinker.  Therefore a corkscrew is just a waste of a tool for me.  A Philips driver on the other hand has some real utility.

It came from a Chinese TAC-Force TF-803 AO knife, which I got here http://www.bladesandbows.co.uk/tac-force-speedster-tf-803bk-7997-p.asp.

Its a terrible knife, came as dull as a 2x4 and I'm still trying to reprofile and get a proper edge on it.

Love the Tinker... great knife. It was my first proper sak and it created the crazyness...
It feels optimum in hand and it has the best snap...
For edc I missed the nailfile and scissors so I had to switch to either Traveller or Swisschamp, but I still use the Tinkers ocassionally (for example on vacation I needed a nice thin, dependable, cheap knofe for food prep, can opening, cap popping, room fixing ... so the Tinker was the preferred choice.

I know people hate the backside Philips, but it feels so much better in hand than the corkscrew.

I too love the small Tinker but I don't carry mine anymore cause it is about 30+ years old and the springs are shot!

Someday I will have to get me another one!:)

I really like the pocket clip. I have several laying around. Did you use the Torx screws or
just phillips head screws? Is the cellidor strong enough to withstand the strain?
Any info helpful.

This Small Tinker was my first SAK, purchased in 1968 or '69 to carry back-packing.  I ended up using it as a whittler, of all things.  The small size, smooth scales, and backside Phillips makes it very comfortable for long sessions of use.  It is now retired, but I have a newer one for days that call for that particular SAK.

For a second, I thought I was seeing a really cool SAK modder's ashtray!

I am not a drinker, and really do like the Tinker for EDC.  But when I am travelling, I tends to carry one with a corkscrew, since it also carries the mini-screwdriver.

I used the Torx screws that came with the clip, I drilled very small pilot holes and then let them cut there own thread. I did take the scale of and epoxy the threads that stuck through to the scale as well to be sure.
So far no signs of any wear on the attachment.

The basic Tinker is a great tool. It's kind of the base model (almost everything else just adds additional layers to it) and yet, it has so much great functionality.  I'm a big fan of scissors, so I prefer the Super Tinker.  Anything more is just fluff.

I have the Super Tinker & Deluxe Tinker and they're both great tools. I think I'll have to get the standard Tinker to complete the family.  8)

I love the Tinker family.  My most carried EDC is the Super Tinker.  For me, a SAK with no scissors = no carry.  I own 2-3 regular Tinkers and  have been eyeing the Deluxe for awhile now.  A small Tinker lives in the small first aid kit in my toiletry bag.  I also carry a Huntsman Tinker (aka Fieldmaster) when I'm going hiking or camping.
Yes that's true, but I've been out to sea a long time.

I EDC the Super Tinker and wouldn't even consider a SAK with a corkscrew. I'm sure an innovative mind could find an endless number of uses for a seemingly limited tool, but one thing the corkscrew could never do is drive or loosen a philips head screw. I would rather pound a cork into a bottle of wine than strip a philips head. Needless to say, I too have Tinker love.

Almost all Officer's SAKs have an openers layer, that mens they can easily handle the phillish screws, and there is no need for corkscrew to do the screwdrivers job. Instead of having "two" phillips screwdrivers, one with the corkscrew has an other useful tool and, at last but not least, the small screwdriver holder/carrier :D

Victorinox can-opener/screw driver?

I carry a Deluxe Tinker in a belt pouch when out and about, but carry a regular Tinker in my
pocket at home. Much prefer the Phillips to a corkscrew - only drink cheap wine (screw caps)
but expensive scotch :-)
