I just tried my Super Tinker and I don't think that the awl is that bad to open and it's brand new
Could be that there is no corkscrew in my way though

The nail nick on the awl is not parallel to the body of the knife. You have to angle your nail toward the top of the knife assuming you are holding it in a verticle position. It should then be easy.

The issue seemed to become somewhat more manageable after buttering the knife up.
