Small fixed blades?
on: June 29, 2008, 05:41:21 PM
What options are available for fixed blades that have a total length shorter than 6"?  After recently seeing the Boker Plus Edit, I have liked the idea of a small, pocketable fixed blade but would like to know more about other options that are available.

Many thanks in advance.

well you know Micky's gonna tell you Fallkniven F1, and he'd be right (I know, shock)
it's one of the best small blades out there mate.

my other 2 favorites are the Scrapyard SS4 and Busse Game Warden because they feel
great in the hand, great steels that are tough and made to last. (I'll post pics for comparison soon)

of course their are way less expensive options, you were looking at neckers/skeleton blades not long ago
and I'm sure you'll get several good ideas coming up.

If it's the push dagger you are referring to, they are illegal to own in the UK. :(

ohh ok I consider those neckers because you can wear them on a cord and or
keep them in your pocket or a sheath, so they have to be smallish.

I like the crkt dogfish (5-1/4)

and the a.g. russell woodswalker (6")

I got each for under 20 usd

the Woodswalker is great, we call it the "Steak Knife" cause it kinda looks like it!
you can get it with either leather or kydex sheaths, we have the kydex ones and
their made perfect for it.

A push dagger is anything with a T Handle.

I haven't got a CS Super Edge, but I have had a few of the Para Edges, which are basically the same thing in different blade configurations and I find them to be excellent knives.

The Becker Necker can be had around $40 and is a great blade.  Thanks again to Mike for sending me a replacement for the one I sold then regretted selling...

One knife that just about every outdoorsman should have IMHO is the OutDoor Edge Wedge, about $30.

I'm a sucker for a good small fixed blade! :D

The Outdoor Edge Wedge was I think the 1997 Blade of the Year winner or something.  You should be able to find them in just about any outdoors shop, or try contacting Marc at EDCDepot.com to see if he has or can get you one.  The blade is basically a thin hunk of sheetmetal and so is very easy to sharpen and keep sharp, plus it has very little drag at all since it doesn't get thick like most blades.  It's also small enough that the police would have a hard time trying to convince anyone you were a mass murdered with it!

If you are interested in a Little Bird Ben, let me know, I might be coerced into letting mine go.

No problem- there's a Wedge II that's also available.  It's a bit longer, but I've never tried it.

The lower one (shorter, single-edge model) was my EDC for several years - until it was stolen out of my car.  :<

Very sharp from the factory, it was a very good slicer and cutter for being such a compact package overall.  A very strong knife, it took and held an edge well.

Mine was used hard for cutting cardboard, thick rope, splitting sticks to start fires, etc.  Used it for backpacking many times.
