Any interest in a minimalist SAK challenge?
on: September 26, 2014, 01:48:18 AM
I've seen on other forums where there have been 30 day challenges to use a minimalist knife, like a Case Peanut, for 30 days exclusively. I was wondering if anyone would be up for trying a similar experiment with a minimalist SAK?

My thought is that everyone could reply if interested, and also suggest some minimalist SAKs.  Then I could do a poll on the SAKs suggested and whatever one is picked, give about a week for everyone to procure one.  Then commence the 30 day challenge.

The goal would be to try and use that SAK exclusively for that time period.  No other SAK, no multi-tool and no single blade knife.  Now, I realize that isn't always practical for everyone, and the goal is for this to be fun, not all rules.

The trick may be how to define minimalist.  My initial thought was no more than a 2-layer SAK, and no larger than a 93mm.  This is completely arbitrary, of course, so feel free to offer suggestions there as well.

What say you?

If the trees blew down the wind and no one was around, would the alphabet song really go backwards?

I think it would be entertaining, and I would take part. But I currently have a limited selection of SAKs and even more limited funds unfortunately.

I am game. But I only have a few saks. But if one of mine fall into the Sak challenge, I would be game.

Can you guys list which ones you have.  Maybe we can make it work somehow.  I imagine this may be a common problem.

I think the spartan (or maybe tinker) would be a good minimalist SAK.   Classic set of tools and 2 layers.  :tu:

What say you?

Good idea.  I'm interested.  But for a guy who switches his EDC stuff around constantly, a 30-day challenge seems like an eternity.  I'll be watching, and maybe participating.

Though, no excuse to buy a new SAK  I'm torn ;)

I like this idea.

But Instead of thinking of a minimalist I'd like to see the most common sak used. I think it would get alot more folks involved.

 minimalist rant

I'd much rather thrive with a few extra things than survive using the bare minimum I need to get by.

Rant concluded :D

I'd be up for the fun if it's a SAK I already own. Not up for buying a knife I wouldn't otherwise choose to own. I would still be carrying a pliers based tool no doubt as I use them regularly, but would use the SAK exclusively so far as possible .... and I'd be honest when I had to cheat  :D

Options for me (based on 2 layer knives I already own) would be:

Pioneer/Cadet
Compact/Timekeeper/84mm Golfer
Spartan/Weekender/Tourist
Vic Sportsman/Wenger Commander
D of E / MFV

.... and possibly a couple of non-Swiss knives too  :D

EDIT:
My personal favourite of the above bunch would probably be my Tourist. It was my first SAK, and carried it on it's own for a lot more than 30 days before I started carrying plier based tools regularly  :) As an extra incentive for me to use my SAK exclusively, I'd pair it with a Juice CS4 .... which many will know I will avoid using unless absolutely necessary :D

Since my EDC is a pioneer, I wonder what would be a stretch for me. Maybe a Bantam

Well, going with Higgins idea, what if we say we'll start the challenge on October 1st using the minimalist SAK of your choice.

Let us know the choice, and the goal is to try and use it exclusively. Feel free to provide updates in this thread, whether good or bad. Pics always encouraged.

Sound ok?

Now, off to pick my SAK (:ahhh)

I'm in for this.  I need to see some more opinions on what constitutes a minimalist SAK though.  I'm sure I have one that would qualify.

OK  :tu: I've decided what I'm going to carry, and it's not the Tourist. If I'm going to go minimal for a month, I might as well do it in style - especially as it's my birthday in October  ;)

Ha, well I meant to say I have at least one that would qualify, not saying I have the "ultimate minimalist SAK" or something like that.

Tinker would be good, Tourist would be tougher.  I've got a Bushcrafter that would make for an interesting month...
