Hook Envy
on: October 02, 2014, 04:13:32 AM
My wife and I were setting up photography lights at a wedding venue and were running into trouble with the lighting crew that didn't think there was enough power available to the ceiling circuits for us to use and had been hogging the boom lift for almost two hours. As a last ditch my wife asked me to figure our how we could run pole mounted lights from the floor. My task was basically to find power.

It was a tricky space, a very old and beautiful bank that had been converted into an event venue but in the multi-million dollar renovations somehow didn't get much of an electrical system upgrade.  After snooping around I realized that some of the granite wall panels were hinged and behind them were most of the electrical outlets.  It was thick granite almost 2 cms and heavy, not easily opened. I pulled out my SAK and was struggling to lift the granite slab using the bottle opener/pry bar without prying against the wood molding and thereby damaging it. I got it to move slightly when my wife informed me that they did the math and were cool with us ceiling mounting the lights. As I was walking away I realized that had I had a SAK with the hook on the back layer I would have been able to slide it in, turn it 90 degrees and pull the panel open.

While I'm not a hook convert yet it was an interesting observation.

I used the hook over the weekend to tamp down some filler in a small narrow hole say 3/8th wide??
It was perfect for the job and was the only tool that would do the job.
Eg SD too wide - awl would have punched a hole not pressed down etc
And I did not have any other prodding implement to hand at the time.

So as usual you always find interesting/useful uses for your SAK tools - even the hook!!

hook is not a dedicated tool like philips screwdriver, saw etc. have many uses. for example i use marlin spike on 111mm for water valves without wheels on urban. Kalr Elsener (R.I.P) knows the secrets.

Necessity is the mother of invention, and the hook separates those who call necessity "a mother", and those that call it "mom". Great use Theonew!

Last use I had for mine was packing fiberglass cored used to chink the doors on my parent's wood stove, has to be replaced every few years.

Necessity is the mother of invention. If you're not ready, it's "a mother". If you are, it's "mom".
