I think I screwed up...
on: July 06, 2008, 06:17:30 AM
I was at a gun show today, and one of the tables was filled with knives and a couple of multitools.  One of them just happened to be an AutoTool for $45...  and I didn't buy it.

So did I screw up by not picking it up?

Are you a collector? I'm not and I probably won't buy it either.

The last one that sold on ebay went for $13 and change, and it had the sheath...I can't link it because you have to be signed in to see ended auctions, but I typed in "Victorinox Autotool" and clicked on the "Completed Auctions" box.

I'm in agreement, unless you want it for a collection.I wouldn't bother.I had one and thought it was kind of a fizzle;it was much too much for my hand;and I'm big with big hands.

AutoTools usually go for ~$50, so if it was in good shape it would have at least been worth trying to bargain with the guy.  I have seen them go cheaper than that (In fact, I have one that ran about $16 if I remember rightly) but it has no sheath and is a bit dinged up.

As a collector, or possibly for re-sale I'd suggest grabbing it, but if you plan to use it, keep walking.  It really is a useless hunk of crap... I know, I have two of them! :P

more info on the AutoTool

It's amazing how it really makes it that much more interesting to have one!

A piece of crap from any other manufacturer is easily dismissed, but from Victorinox it's something half of us would trade our mothers for! :D

The AutoTool I looked at was practically brand new.  He had the sheath, and it wouldn't have suprised me if he had the box too... (if it came in one)

The guy seemed to be a pretty serious SAK collector... he also had about 6 other multitools inluding a couple of SOG's and a SwissTool.

I would have wanted it as part of a collection... it's just wierd enough to be interesting, plus it's made by a decent manufacturer.

Hehe -  I want one, just for that. What a wonderfully silly idea.

I used to come here a lot.

It's a totally ridiculous feature. (I love it!)  Its just difficult to imagine something like that coming out of the super-conservative Victorinox factory. ::)

It does seem a bit out of character doesn't it?

Mind you, in Switzerland they might go for that sort of thing. I think I'd use it - it would save ruining credit cards like I do at the moment. They are still the best ice-scrapers I've come across!

I actually use my autotool.   The tire guage works well enough and its always in the glove box.

Other than that and the light (which is about 4X dimmer than my fauxton) it is pretty much useless.

I figure if anyone gets me mad enough on the road, I can always test its projectile function...

I do think its better than the swiss ratchet though.   That thing is just a pound of complete displeasure.

Hmmm, how about you try modding a SportRatchet onto an AutoTool? (AutoRatchet?) Then you could have TWO pounds of complete displeasure. :)
