What is the purpose of this tool? I-WAN-TA
on: October 26, 2014, 05:38:34 AM
Hi Guys

I came across this interesting tool a while back. Search as I may I have not been able to find out anything about it.

It is marked I-WAN-TA, PAT No 16544.

It is hinged in the middle and appears to be made to fulfill up to 8 functions, although I can not identify each use.

The first and most obvious use is as a bottle opener. The other uses have to be specific, otherwise why would anyone apply for a patent on a Bottle Opener??.

The whole device is 5 3/4" long in the fully open position.

Image 1

What looks like a Wire Cutter is by the hinge.
There is a Shoulder stop on the side. I am certain that this would fulfill another purpose other than for closing the device in a position.

Image 2

There is another form of cutter which has beveled edges on both sides.
A point for some purpose.
A gap for unknown purpose.
A point on the very end which is beveled to make it quite sharp. I assume this is for use as a scribe.

Image 3

On the back is a small file section.

Image 4

Does anyone have any idea what this tool was meant for?

If it was possible to find the Patent documentation that would describe its use. Unfortunately the country of Patent is not shown.

Hope you can help.

I assume it has no specific purpose. The gap looks like a hook for carrying or pulling things. Combined with the pointy end next to it it appears like you would stab something e.g. a box, a piece of meat and then use the hook to pull it, like a fish hook

The two circular holes with beveled edges look like another line/wire cutter of some sort. It looks to me like if you slid a line into that circular hole of the non-bottle-opener end, you could then close the tool on the line, and the shape would guide the line into that circular hole, then closing it further would cut it. For some reason, this seems like it might be handy for Bank Line fishing work or maybe working with fishing nets. The hook at the end of the non-bottle-opener end also is maybe to either hook a gill to carry a fish, or to hook a string of fish to carry. You could then get a firmer grip on it with a finger or two through the bottle opener loop. But I am really just guessing.

So, that's my guess. Throw it in a tackle box.

Neat find!  Maybe Bob will happen by and tell us more.  He tends to have a knack at finding patent info on the hard to find items.

Can I have a guess too??

I'm beginning to think its designed for bar work.

The part that looks like a can opener near the pivot, is that a foil cutter?
The wire cutter for champagne bottles and I'll hazard a guess that the sharp end bit is designed to be pushed through corks (would explain why its so smooth) once through the flared hook grabs the bottom of the cork and then shoulder stop swings round and  rests on the bottle top for leverage.

I'm probably way off the mark
I don't claim to know it all, but what I do know is right.

I may be way off base but this talk of a specific trade got me thinking as who would be offering a multi as a promotional or ad piece.
And I have a guess.
I-WAN-TA = I want TravelCenters of America truck stops; TA is their short name/logo

The point with the hook we cant figure out a use for looks like a tire seating hook with a point added at the tip to work into a tire bead to break it remove a tire if your working on inner tubes and a rounded hook that won't damage the rubber. Just look at the hooks on some tire levers.

The circular cutter may be the right size for trimming tire plugs with a pointy awl near by to cleanup the hole before hand.

And of course who wouldn't want a beer after wrestling with a tire.

The only problem with my theory is it's in Australia so if it is a TA product its really traveled. And that patent no in the us was used in the 1830's or so for a furnace. So I just busted my idea myself.

Could it be a bicycle or motorbike (any spoked wheel) repair tool?

The "Gap for??" hook looks like the hook that is used on bike tyre levers.  Once the tyre is lifted above the rim, the hook is engaged on a spoke, to hold the lever in place.

The notch that was identified as a wire cutter might be a spoke spanner.

The bottle opener end would be the bit that is used to engage under the tyre.

The file is used to roughen the tube in preparation for gluing on the patch.

The holes with the beveled edges could be to cut valve tubing or plugs for tubeless tyres.  I can't think of a reason to have the point at these holes.

Nor can I think of a definite use for the shoulder stop other than to hold the device closed.  Maybe it was used to burnish down the patch?   If one swings the two pieces around as far as they will go, is there any way the shoulder stop and the point near the bevelled holes could function as a can opener?

I believe this is a complete package related to food. Like a bottle opener a sharp point to make hole. Wire cutter.

You are all wrong. Someone came close, a bit, sort of. Then again, to be fair, none of you had the instructions! It's a 1930's vintage multi-tool. Australian. The Patent number is too low for the age of the item to be British, whilst over in the US this Patent number was used in the 1830's for an industrial furnace, so, presumably, being the second one reported as coming out of Australia, it's Australian. Going by the art deco style graphics of the vehicle and aircraft, late 1930s would date it. Here's a list of the 10 functions;

1. Wire cutter
2. Cigar cutter
3. Hole punch
4. Nail file
5. Nail cleaner
6. Pipe cleaner
7. Bottle opener
8. Cigarette holder
9. Hook forming a coat hangar
10. Hook forming a hangar for a hat.
