Adventure Sunday- October 26, 2014

Don't get Paddled
Part of the MTO Children's Story Series
Complete with gifs.

On a bitter Fall day Grant and Megan decided to paddle the most beautiful part of the Shubenacadie Canal- the 'Deep Cut'. Filled with excitement they got up extra early and headed down to Shubie Park in order to launch the boats.

As Grant drove closer to the boat launch, he began to fill with rage.
Not a parking spot to be found. A marathon was taking place in the park with runners in spandex darting everywhere like ants under an overturned log.

A blue Hyundai Accent was parked in his usual larger trailer spot. Calm, cool and collected Grant filled with rage.

“Smurfing, Hyundai” he mumbled.
He looked a little nutty.

After the disappointment of the morning they decided to head out to Grand Lake. This particular lake can be hit or miss. It can be placid and beautiful or fierce and full of waves. Luckily for them it was calm and perfect... or so they thought.

Fish were jumping out in the water and many fishermen were to be found.
It was a beautiful scene.

Megan began to notice the unusual amount of insects flying through the air. After she complained multiple times- Grant decided he needed to take care of business.

He quickly assembled a kayak paddle and got to work.

Whoosh
Thwap

You'd have thought he was polespearing a great white shark. Grant was fierce and speared many insects that day.
He was proud.

Megan was only slightly amused.
Enough insects had been jabbed and it was time to paddle.

Grant and Megan launched their boats and headed out onto the lake.

The insects were far worse out there than they had imagined. Fish continued to jump, fishermen continued to fish and Megan continued to complain.

“Insects are in my eyes!
They're getting in my hair!
These insects are everywhere!”
Megan screamed.

Tired of Megan's complaining, Grant swiftly paddled away in his pink boat.
“Slow down!” Megan yelled, but Grant continued.
“Come on pink power! Go faster” Grant yelled.

“Pink power?” Megan said to herself. “Boy, he really loves that pink kayak”

Now Megan was filled with rage over the multiple insects attacking her constantly.
She needed something to take her rage out on. She thought about taking it out on Grant but quickly realized he was her only drive home.

She chose her victim wisely.

An innocent pink buoy was floating in the water. She quickly approached ramming speed. Paddling faster and faster.

The pink buoy did not see it coming.

Frightened by Megan's attack on the pink buoy, Grant decided it made sense to turn back and head for shore.

Megan was a little sad, but they headed back anyway.

Slightly annoyed that Grant had wanted to return early, Megan began to pick on him.
She had recently read this article http://www.wikihow.com/Make-Fun-of-Others and it was time to practice on a real live person.

She did the one thing she knew she shouldn't do.
She made fun of Grant's pink kayak. One of his most prized pink possessions.

Megan thought for sure that Grant's face was going to turn the same colour as his kayak. He was definitely annoyed.
She quickly headed back toward the Jeep.

She looked back and saw...

this whole post just brightened my day! very well done, especially the gifs. :D

hope you guys had fun and didn't get completely eaten up by the bugs. (I can sympathize... if there's a mosquito within 3 miles, it will somehow find me and try to bite me.)

The bugs weren't biting us, we were biting them. There were so many of them they were getting in our mouths, eyes, nose etc.

Thanks for the compliment- there aren't many combat kayakers out there anymore.  It's a dangerous sport and not a lot of people survive as long as I have....

I went to the local shop for a pint of milk if that counts  :tu:

I've heard that the locals can be rather nasty back in the woods there, so if you do go explore the area, be careful.  I can get you GPS coordinates from Google Maps if you want them.

I went fly fishing for brown trout and also went salmon fishing and didn't catch anything either time. Combat kayaking looks much more fun than not catching fish

if you look closely you'll see how dangerous and quick I really am.... did I change paddles before anyone could see or did I somehow straighten the shaft and change the color in the blink of an eye?  Only the Kayak Ninja knows for sure....

I haven't had an excuse to make a gif in over ten years. Haha.

I love fly fishing. A guy in waders was out in the lake on Sunday.

A little known Grant Fact:
Grant is one of Canada's top combat kayakers. In fact, he won the coveted silver igloo prize last year. Amazing right?
