If someone is interested in a garant knife I have one available new in box. Bought 2 thinking I may use it. But reality is it will never be carried to many other cool knives to carry.  PM me for details

Just a Hercules for me. I wouldn't mind a Trekker or Soldier though  .

My favorite 111mm model--the Equestrian.

I started horseback riding at the same time I started collecting knives. I remember looking at it every time I read the Smoky Mountain Knife Works catalog. Even though I stopped riding regularly about a month after I started, I've still admired the model, despite not having any use for the hoof pick other than what it's intended for.  Time, I think I bought a horse!

I have various military issued models, the Sentinel NS(as I now mostly carry a Leatherman, an easily accessed blade is a necessity, and the toothpick and tweezers are one thing I miss that my SAKs always had.  I hate partially serated blades, so the plain edge model is a must!) and the Rescue Tool on my list too.

I don't know why, but I want the Swiss Cheese Knife!   I eat a lot of cheese and I think I could get much use out of it! Only think I don't like, high price and relatively few tools.  It's only a two layer model!

It's an expanding family here - my favourite size SAK.

The family to date:
- One Handed Trekker Non Serrated X 2 (Black; Camo)
- Sentinel (ignore this!)
- 2011 Soldier; 2012 on the way
- Damascus Solider
- Dual Pro X, X 2 (normal; one I changed to have black scales)
- Centurion
- Hercules

Next things being considered for the family are a RescueTool, a Skipper OR Mariner/Helmsman and perhaps a WorkChamp XL.

My increasingly battered EDC one handed trekker pictured.

The OHO seems limited to the liner lock - so I think (correct me here!) that the question comes back to flexibility of the liner lock system.

On the Swiss Army Knives Collectors Facebook in February, Robert Elsener responded to a similar sort of question - why the (awesome) liner lock cannot be expanded to four+ layers (meaning scissors etc).

The response from Robert was...
"The pocket tools with liner or slide locking system are different in construction. For the fire brigades, the rescue services, the police and army forces we developed a more robust and sturdy pocket tool (0.83-0.86). They are much stronger, with thicker rivets and blades and equipped with a liner lock system for the blade and the powerful screwdriver. The same sized pocket tools (0.88-0.90) are released via slider which is comfortable and easy to operate. A combination of the different tools is not possible. To get more layers for the liner system new toolings would be needed."

Consider the Hardwood Cheese Knife - it has the opener layer.
But also a bit pricier.

Here are mine, with some Wenger lock blades into the mix:

The 111s, from left, are Workchamp, Skipper, Soldier, OH Trekker NS, and a late 80s or early 90s Adventurer:

...and sideways, to show relative thicknesses:

As a side note, these are good pix to show scale with Wenger's (now Vic's other) lock blade lines.

I just got the German version Soldier 111mm and the opening hole is more narrow than my Trekker.
Also it is the smoothest opening of my 111mm OHOer's.

Over the past 2 years these type knives have been slowly becoming my main edc.
Being left handed these are more friendly to open and close and since I work construction I find myself using all the tools every so often.
I have grown to like the serrations on the front too.

I do plan on modding one to plain edge just to see how I like that.
For the money these are great knives and super useful.

I still carry a Minichamp on my keys and rotate my GEC 15 or alox Soldier in my opposite pocket but the 111's are my go to these days.

Does the German Soldier seem cumbersome when pocket carrying?

Was watching an old Sliders tv show episode yesterday, and spotted a SAK. Posted about it here: http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,61620.0.html. I think it was a 111mm because one scene showed it with the slide lock on the side. Is the 111mm the only size that came with the slide lock?

Based on my carrying of the Trekker, I would answer specifically:

  • If you just drop it in your hip pocket, then yes. They tend to turn sideways and just feel long and lumpy.
  • If you hang it from your belt on a pocket hanger, then no; they're great to pocket carry that way.
  • in a 5th pocket, as on carpenter jeans or painter's pants, no.
  • In a back pocket, they're fine, as long as you don't sit on them.

Here are 2 of mine.  The Hunter stays in a backpack with other hunting supplies and the rucksack gets carried mostly on weekends.

I also rotate in two 111mm OHTrekker(Serrated and Non serrated) and a 111 Hercules.  I have the original 111mm Hunter with a sidelock that gets rotated in at times.   I also have a 111 picnicker that is delegated to a knife drawer for family use for now.  I guess the saw is important to me.

I regularly pocket carry the similar One Handed Trekker and would say "no". It's heavy enough to stay in your pocket and light enough not to be normally noticeable. It sits particularly nicely underneath a wallet.

I've thought about getting a OH Trekker/Soldier and using that as my main MT and pairing it up with a pair of slip joint pliers and a pair of electrician scissors for plier and cutting duties. Any thoughts?
