Just checking to see how many folks are using the main part of the site.  It seems to be getting a significant number of hits and I'd like to guage whether it's forum members or outsiders/new members that are looking at it.

Don't worry if you don't look at it.  Answer honestly- I can't see who said what, so I won't get mad at you! :P

I forget it's there actually since I don't have it bookmarked & it isn't obvious from the links on the forum.

I agree with Tom.  Maybe we could get a tab up by the Home, Help, Search, Profile and Logout buttons. I'd visit it more often that way.

I have been meaning to change the logo on the top right to link to the main site lately but I never got around to doing it.  I'll try to get it taken care of soon.

Def,

Here are some thoughts about the main site since you're asking.  I know you're having a tough day, so don't take this personally, but from one who designs web pages to another.

It's  pretty good, but still fairly rudimentary & I found a lot of typos.

You have duplication of links from the top left & the Main Menu.

Some things don't look like they've been updated in a while.

The pages are really wide on my PC with Firefox, so I have to do a lot of left-right scrolling.

I'm confused why it says "Tool Reviews Written by Administrator" above the image links to the reviews.

The pics are nice & nicely arranged.

The long popup menus from the Main Menu are too long to fit the page down & sometimes disappear when I try to scroll down (mainly the Leatherman links).

Tim's ad is off the page to the left on my PC screen.

I like the layout.

I go to the main site pretty often, because I've been (slowly but surely) sending Def more material for the Manufacturer's Information page, and I check to see how each one looks after it gets posted. Following Tom's format above.....

I use Internet Explorer, and I don't have any wide pages or left-to-right scrolling.

I like the tool-picture hot links arrangement.

The long menu that pops up when my cursor is on "Leatherman" does disappear off the bottom of my screen, just like Tom said.

However, Tim's banner looks normal and is entirely visible.

Okay.  I switched to Internet Explorer & still have the problem with left-right scrolling.  I'm using 1024 x 768 on a normal aspect ratio monitor.

Now I have the EDC Depot banner & it looks fine.

Okay, my monitor setting is 1280 x 800, and I have no idea whether the aspect ratio is normal or not.

Same problem here with the left to right scrolling.  I am using the 1024x768 aspect ratio also.

I have a pretty high resolution myself and I like big pics.  They all look good at 1280x1024.....

As for the rest, well the site is always under construction for one thing or another.  The Written by Administrator thing, that's me.  I am the Administrator.  Occasionally some are written by others and posted by me.  i usually try to credit whoever wrote it, but I do occasionally forget, so if you see Administrator on something you wrote, let me know.

For the better part of the life of Multitool.org I was working alot and didn't have alot of time to dedicate to it.  Now that I have cured my work problem I'm trying to get a number of things taken care of, so please bear with me a little longer.

I'm not a web designer myself.  I am a web publisher.  Esteban is a programmer.  We don't currently have a designer, so if anyone wants to offer suggestions, time or experience, it would be welcomed with open arms.

J-sews,

By normal aspect ratio I just meant not a widescreen monitor.

Def,

No need to apologize.  You have built a site that we all want to be a part of.  We know you're busy, but since you asked I was trying to offer some feedback.  I might be interested in helping with the design, but I favor a pretty simple layout.  You can see that on my website - http://tommunch.com.  I like content & don't care so much for bells & whistles like some sites have.

Tom

I read the main site quite a bit when deciding on a tool I'd EDC...I see it more as an encyclopedia set or reference book on your bookshelf...you don't grab a volume every day, but when you need info on something, you know where to go.  I read the new reviews when they get posted, those are always interesting since I don't own many multis.

That's basically what I was thinking.  I don;t expect folks to constantly read reviews over and over again or anything like that.

What I was basically looking for was to see if we were getting page hits internall (members) or externally (non members) to see where the traffic was coming from.  That kinda thing helps me determine how to manage the site, where to advertise etc.

I keep a pretty close watch on all the "numbers" on the forum, the main site, SOSAKOnline and all the other sites I am involved with, and rather than trying to track everyone and their IP numbers down, match up who and where etc, I thought it would be easier to just ask.

Plus, I like to get feedback, even when Tom is listing my shortcomings! :P

As I said though, the forum and the main site are running pretty close in a few areas (overall consumed bandwidth) and greatly differ in others like the number of page turns.  This basically says to me that less people are hitting the main site, but those that do are spending the time to read multiple reviews or conduct serious research.  Since many of the folks here select tools based more on what they don;t already have rather than what has the features they are looking for, the reviews shouldn't be as significant to forum members as they are to folks trying to decide between Tool A and Tool B in Wal Mart.  These folks are likely to read reviews, but since it's a matter of whether to spend the extra $5 or not for one brand or another, they likely aren't going to put the time in after the purchase to hang out and discuss it.

So, what you end up with are two very different kinds of people visiting the site.  Without knowing how many of "us" are visiting the main site, it's hard to tell how many one time decidion maker types are visiting the main site since they don't leave a trace, other than tracking an IP address, which I don;t have any inclination of doing.

Lotsa business mumbo jumbo and marketing bullpoopy, but trust me, this extra behind the scenes type of legwork will help Multitool.org grow faster and better for everyone.
