Bad Heat Treat

Has anyone owned a knife that came with a poor heat treating? I own multiple Bucks, they're my favorite brand by far. Typically their 420hc is a very solid all around steel, but I have just one knife that seems to go dull as soon as I look at it.

Anyone else has similar experiences from brands you weren't expecting it from?

Sometimes the factory edge gets a bit soft from the heating that occurs during sharpening etc. You may find than once you sharpen it a few times you will unveil harder steel.
the only soft edges I have seen were on really cheap knives.

I have sharpened it quite a few times, but I do know what you're saying. It isn't total garbage, just noticeably different than the numerous other knives by them I have in the same steel.

I've had that happen with Gerber and Buck but more with Cold Steel and SOG. That was years ago though, I haven't bought knives from these brands for quite some time.

I've had three over the years that I suppected the heat treat was bad. A Buck 110, Spyderco C16, Emerson CQC-7.     :shrug:

That's a lot worse than my situation, I'm sorry man :-\. Mine is one of Buck's lower end folders and has just earned its spot as a work hard user as a result. I'm fairly sure they would replace it were I to send it back, but it's not my biggest priority. More practice with the sharpening stones right?

Three knives over forty years isnt exactly earth shattering. While no one wants a problem knife things happen. Fortunately most good knife companies stand behind their product and will take care of you when problems happen.

Buck has gone out of their way to help me out before, so I'm not holding it against them. It's sort of an interesting contrast when you have two blade in the same steel and can see the effects a good heat treat has.

The best was the fact that I found out the temper was poor when I was stuck on an island in a terrible downpour for 24 hours......

The worst one was a 1st gen Flash II. I still have it though, lives out the gge for those odd jobs.
