Favorite Handle and Why???
on: November 23, 2014, 11:25:21 AM
As the title and poll ask, what is your favorite SAK handle type and why?  Also as a side note do you prefer only that handle type or do you alternate depending on mood, day of the week, work, down time, outdoors, lunar/tidal elements, etc....

I bring this up because ever since I rediscovered SAK's with Alox I have had a difficult time warming up to celidor models.  I have my all time favorite Super Tinker and Classic but those don't really see pocket time anymore.  I've never broken a celidor scale buuuuut after falling hard for Alox the celidor handles feel inferior.  The plus side though to celidor are the extra gizmos that come with it: tweezers, toothpick, pen, and pin.

Cast your votes, give a little explanation, and admit that we are SAKaholics together :D :climber:

I`d have to say alox. The missing T & T is not a problem for me because I`m never far from a Classic and a couple of Swisscards.

Voted for Wood because of tactile and aesthetic reasons.
But there are no wooden Plus-scales and the cleaning of the knife is a bit more difficult.

Besides this I would love to have G10 Plus-scales.

I just realized on tapatalk I can't see the poll option. I posted this thread using a PC on lunch and didn't realize that the poll doesn't appear.

I second the G10 plus scales as long as I can stick a pocket clip on it :D

ALOX but cellidor has long been a fav as well. I used to dismiss Plus scales but as of late, the pen is becoming indispensable at times.

I like them all, except the nylon of the budget Vics. My favorites are translucent, alox and FRN handles.

Alox!!!

I love the outstanding durability, feel, and bulletproof construction. If I need a tweezers or toothpick, then Ihave a cellidor classic on my keys. But my pocket knife SAK is alox.
Don't get too serious, just enough will do.

Out of the 5 hardest working of my SAKs there are 3x nylon, 1x Cellidor and 1x Alox.

What do I like the most? The classic red cellidor is quintessential, plus scales even better.

The hard use 5  (excludes keychains)

91mm Ecoline Climber
84mm Recruit Eco

My favorite scales are a close tie between wenger's stainless steel and normal alox. I love the feeling of metal in each case.

:ahhh ... like them all 8) no doubt about that.
And love the alox awl

But, being minimalistic and holistic at once, and have to have as many as possible back layer tools and all scale & + tools (pen, light, t&t, mini screwdriver, pin) at hand, as well as the SwissChamp's or at least its crucial layer tools, what is attainable with 2 SAK's, the MiniChamp and let's say "My Trobleshooter" >:D or any similar standard SAK, will vote (choose) for ever and ever, if there is only one option, of course, for cellidor :D

Till now :o  :ahhh

Is this kinda Alox Yeoman? :pok: :D

If my moment serves, hiraethus built that himself. Basically an Explorer rebuilt with screw pivots ala Syph, and Alox scales from a cheap SAK-alike

Yep, one of mine - but a Yeoman with hand made aluminium scales.  I sold it to Felinevet and really ought to get round to making more.  The Aloxplorer was peened and belongs to Papercut, IIRC.

Nylon, strangely.

I LOVE the solid feel of the Alox, both on my Farmer, and the cadet and Moneyclip I had previously.

I LOVE the look and feel of the classic Celador scales. I look at them, and something in my brain lights up with happy.

But the Nylon scales... Wow. Both my previous OHO Trekker and my current Rucksack feel incredibly awesome in-hand. And the Stay Glow scales on a 91mm isn't a gimmick. It makes the visibility of your tool amazing. It takes the notion of being able to see the tool (the classic red scales) and multiplies it exponentially. I'm guessing the Rescue Tool can be seen from space. :D

When I get new celador tools, I always feel bad about the initial scuffing. Not a problem with the Nylon scales. They also just feel a tad more secure in grip.

I think if I could get a custom 91mm SAK with mastadon ivory scales, I'd create a cult around it. :D

I'm not a huge fan of Alox, I don't particularly like the feel for a start, though I do have a few metal scaled Wengers I like. I do have a couple of wood scaled Wengers and a horn scaled Vic too. All that said my vote went to plus scaled Celidor for the extra functions/utility

I chose 'Other', more specifically Stag. Love it for esthetic and tactile reasons. On the other hand I seldom carry it. Its a bit too pricey to risk damaging.

I love the Plus Scales.  T & T are useful, the Pin has come in handy at times, but the Pen is the most useful thing I've found.

That said, there's nothing I'd like more than Alox Plus scales.

Cellidor with plus scales.

I have an alox farmer and a cadet that I rarely use because I like having the scale tools.

There is definately a bit of elitism associated with alox.
