There is no substitute for the Sharpie, or is there?
on: November 29, 2014, 03:22:41 AM
I bought some cheap and cheerful mini sharpie wanabee's thinking that saving a few buck would be worth it.  I have to report that they WERE NOT.  I got them from Harbor Freight and while when new they were pretty good I soon realized they just weren't up to snuff.

They didn't really stay put on any other surface than paper and I don't use them for paper so FAIL.

I'll stick to the real deal and only buy Sharpie's.

My GF is oddly into 'office supplies', and always has sharpies around.
including the metal sharpies.  I have a black & bronze-metal in my pocket at work all the time.
So yes- there is no substitute!

We have a lot of Sharpies in the house and I usually carry a small black Sharpie in a shirt pocket.

One of the most useful Sharpies is the metallic silver colored fine point version.  The silver color shows up well when marking dark (e.g., black or navy blue) items.  I use it to write on wall wart power supplies and AC line cord plugs.

I don't know reason, but the metallic colored Sharpie caps do not provide a pocket clip like other color Sharpies have.

I am sorry to say, that my experience in Sharpie is not so good. With my work, i need good marker pen. I write few dozens of inspection stickers a day. These marker writings have to stay put for two years, max ten. And i need good marker for this. Sometimes i like to try different markers, and last one was Sharpie. I have to say, that it felt, and seemed like i was writing with dried up pen. Starts poorly, and as writing goes on, it starts to do better. But after awhile offline, it does same. I haven been able to observe it long enough to see how it takes weather conditions. But now, i am not impressed.

For a fact. I bought two at same time, and they perform equally...

I think this is because you are supposed to store the metallic ones 'upside down'.

What I mark doesn't need to live up to those environments it is neat to see those pens can.  Thanks  :salute:

I do like a Sharpie, but I'm also a fan of these Bic markers.  A bit more bulky than a Sharpie but does the job well.

I think like many things "we" get so used to hearing about an item that we don't look past it.  The sharpie is pretty popular here in the US and while it works fine and in most cases good enough "we" don't look past it for a better performer.

The pens mentioned are terrific and if what someone is marking needs to stay put then these look like great alternatives.

That textmark is great user, and its great when new. But it tends to risp if you put too much of pressure to it. I can send you used one to try, for i have no new ones for now. PM me, if you like to try it out.

I've used these traditionally for all of my inspections tags until recently using on State Tags for Fire Extinguishers. For some reason the coating on the tag makes any sharpie useless to me now. Somehow others are able to use them without fail but as for me, I need something better.

There were some good options mentioned.  Maybe try one out?  I'm still using sharpies but recently got hold of another pen but I cannot recall the name.  In the morning I'll locate it and post up a picture.

I've been using this Uni Super Ink Marker.  I like the smaller size and I've not found anything it doesn't write on yet.

Mini Sharpies are available only as a back-to-school item, so watch for them every August.  I buy about 6x to get me through the year.

Anybody tried these?

That's just a grease pencil, isn't it?  I use them a fair bit at work, and I find them very handy.

As for the short Sharpies, I got a Stanley one at a hardware store that I keep on my work lanyard with my work ID.  It's not a Sharpie, but it seems like pretty well exactly the same thing.

They list the markings temperature temperature resistant up to 1000°C. I thought classic grease pencil markings couldn't handle that?

Lot of great suggestions in here :like: I have been using Hi Lighters for several years now and have recently went with the solid gel Sharpie ones and am very well pleased with them :o I am still using regular ones as well but the gel can be left uncapped for days and is extremely bright :dd: :salute: I also use regular Sharpie's and other variations of them for marking work tools and the like plus making height (level) marks around buildings

For permanent markers I have used sharpie for years. They have always held up well in an industrial atmosphere.
