What to do, clamshell Radio Shack Vic.
on: December 03, 2014, 02:39:56 AM
I just won this SAK on eBay at a very reasonable price (it was listed simply as "Victorinox The Original Swiss Army Knife").

I am an Electrician Blade aficionado so getting a mint (I sure it's not really mint, is should have plenty of scuff marks on the front scale) Radio Shack is relay a big deal for me.

I have two other Radio Shack's I must say. One is in almost mint condition (perfect tools, just some minor scuff marks on both scales that have been remove on the mos part using Novus plastic polishing system) and was bought without box or any other type of packaging. The other one is a used one with very, very decent tools and scales with some deep scratches. This last one can be put in near mint condition just by rescaling.

Now the question: what should I do to the new Clam-shell SAK?

1.- Leave it in the Clam-shell for eternity? (I would punch a little vent hole in the Clam-Shell any ways).
2.- Unpack it and frame it together with the product card?
3.- Turn it into a user.
4.- Put up for auction on eBay with a precise description and try to me some money? I bought it for $21, I put a max bid of $45 and wouldn't it go for less than $60.
5.- Put if up for a draw and give the money to some local children charity. I know there are plenty that will appreciate it this Christmas. (to be honest I haven't though about this one when I started typing this post )

Your thoughts please.

It's a user. Open it and use it. other than the fact that it was packaged for Radio Shack, is there anything special about it?

Im from the 505 also

To the Thread originator.  Sell it for more at auction and parlay that money into something you really want to rotate into daily use- or a good light

It is a 84mm Electrician. It's the only 84mm and Cellidor, for that mater, that was made with an electrician blade except, of coarse, for the SwissChamp XL/XLT/XXLT/XAVT.

It way sold in the US mainly by Radio Shack and was special packaged for them.  They've been discontinued for a while, are somewhat rare and being Calm-shell package guaranties the SAK has not be used before.

The fact that Radio Shack may become a casualty very soon is also par of their appeal to people like me that were found of the company in their good old days when they use to carry quality products or make their own unique stuff.

What he said!

SAK's are first and foremost tools and tools are meant to be used.

But it's yours so it's your choice :salute:

If you bought it with the intention of flipping it then flip away.  If you are thinking of moving it on then why not open it and you enjoy it?

I too am fond of the Vic Electricians. I would say if you collect Vics at all, store it away for down the road to keep, sell, or use for trade bait.

Used models of these pop up pretty often on the bay.

If all yours are users, break it open and enjoy.

Either way - it's not a real rare or highly collectible model so I don't think you'd be able to make a big killing trying to flip it.

I managed Radio Shacks from 1988 to 1999. I think I remember those, or a model close to it. I believe I bought one at the time that had a serrated blade. Not sure if I still have it. That brings back memories either way!!
