Should I send it back? Am I expecting to much?
on: December 06, 2014, 12:45:59 AM
So I received the Dragonfly 2 in H-1 full serrated and immediately noticed the lock not engaging properly. Now the question arises weather to send it back for a different one or not? Now for me the obvious answer is yes. The problem I am predicting though is since these were put on sale (and sold out) on cyber Monday they might not have any left. I do know the company I bought it from keeps 2-3 extra for just this kind of thing, but last time I ordered from them (Griptilian) they "accidentally" sold the 2-3 extra they keep for replacing returns. I will e-mail them and hope for the best.
Now my other question is am I expecting to much? I feel like I am almost always disappointed (due to quality control) as of late when it comes to buying folders. Is it just me? Am I just unlucky? Is quality actually dropping on these products? A combination of these maybe?

Pretty much says it all IMO.

I do feel on some things complained about here on MTo they are trivial complaints.

A non functioning lock is a big issue.

By all means contact them and make them aware of the problem, although looking at the pics it looks like the issue may be fixable with a bit of careful file work if you can't get them to resolve it

I have one like it, it's just aesthetics and the lock works properly. There's probably just a fraction of a millimeter too much meat on the "hammer" so the backspring doesn't sit flush when opened but it's flush with the scales.

As for returning it or not, your call. It's far easier for you to return it than it would be for me. ;)

I just noticed I must have deleted half of my post as I was posting from the phone. What I meant to say was that the backspring isn't flush when the knife is open, but is flush with the scale when the knife is closed. It did annoy me quite a bit when I got it but doesn't that much anymore. And returning it, the shipping, potential import taxes upon return to me, ... made me choose against the return.

I've had locks not flush on Spydercos a few times.  Once (with a Native 3) it was bad, the other 2-3 times it made no difference.  It is a flaw, but you have to decide if it's a big enough flaw to make it worth your while.

That is not unusal for a Spyderco lock back to look like that. I've seen lots of them like it. Does it lock up tight. If so it is only an apperence issue. Which I would not like. This is why I dislike to buy over the internet. Your seller may replace it but I can just about guaranty Spyderco wont unless the lock fails. they will tell you it is in spec and send it back.
What? Enablers! Are you serrrrious? Where? I dont see any.

I must be luckier than I think then because I own quite a few Spydercos (as I know you do as well) and have never had a lock back look like this. It does lock up tight and I tried to close it while locked open to see if it would fold and it would not. Either way I will still think of it as having a flaw like the cutout not being milled enough or things like that. Even if it is just cosmetic it bugs me in the way it feels in hand. I have been fiddling with it and I feel it ever time I hold the knife because that is where my thumb naturally rest. Its not a huge deal in all reality so I will just see what the dealer says and decide what I will do then.

I understand where your coming from capt. and I dont like knives to have a lock that looks like that either. I sent a Salt I back to A G russell for the same reason. They replaces it and the next one was GTG! Hopefully your dealer will take care of you.

I feel like they would, but I have a bad feeling they will not have a replacement.

I wish. I would be more than content with working for a knife company personally checking every single knife for quality control issues though.  :tu:

Have a number of Spydies with zero issues but there CS is very good.

I would not bother with whoever you bought it from just go through Spyderco.

If I go through Spyderco I will most likely have to pay to ship it to them. Their is also a chance they will not consider this something to be fixed under warranty. I am trying to avoid that. If it comes down to that then I might not even send it in. I have not decided yet.

I have some case backlocks with the same issue.

They do, irrespective of that, lock solid.

This is unusual for me to suggest, but I  think you may need to move up to a Chris Reeves knife ; You seem to have spent enough money lately on knives that you are unhappy with  :D

You know Capt, I was thinking a similar thought.  With what has been spent on the last few knives and the dissatisfaction and let down you could have certainly afforded a semi custom.  I bet having one great knife ( irrespective of brand ) vs several knives you might be so much more satisfied.

Hmm good point.

Might be easier to just send it to me. I am sure I could live with the issues it has.

The QC issues you have had with spyderco lately has me worried. Their knives are IMO way to expencive to have such flaws.
I can understand such things happening with a <$20 folder, but not with a $50+ folder. And certainly not with a $100+ folder.
I hope I dont get any similar issues when I buy my next Spyderco.

My Seki-City Spydercos have all been fine.

Might be coincidence, might be luck.

Quick update. They offered to return it for a refund, but as I expected they do not have any to replace it with. Since I bought this on sale and got a great price on it, it is not worth returning in my opinion. I rather have the knife the way it is then a refund. Either I will keep it or possibly pass it on to someone else.

Yea, I have been wanting a Chris Reeve for some time now. Maybe I will just save up and get one.
