Official Fidget Thread! Pics Encouraged!
on: December 11, 2014, 07:00:52 AM
Let me start by defining a fidget. Its anything you "play" with. A lot of times you will sit down, and start flicking open a knife, or rolling a coin between your fingers, or clicking a pen.

Although i do want to know what your Fidgeting is, there are certain things out there actully called fidgets. They are simply toys/doohickies that occupy the hands while you listen think, type, etc...

Ill start. I found these on Etsy and absolutely love them. They are silent, and can be exposed in general public and classroom environments.

I DO realize A.L.O.T. of yall just flick knives, or open MTs, or roll coins but i want to KNOW about it in this thread.

Note* I may be using these findings for a statistics class. As "fidgets" are also used in ESE Settings .

I carry a challenge coin on my keyring carabiner and spin it when walking behind people, they look around thinking they have dropped a coin. It's a pretty fun game.

Zippos. I am always opening and closing my Zippo. And if I am very bored, I will start doing tricks with it.

I used to fiddle with my Zippo back when I was a smoker. one hand pinch opening and then close.. repeat ad nauseam.

For years it was my komboloi, first a silver with corneole, then a coral root, now an obsidian from Santorini. I like them heavy, my best is from amber that belonged to my grandfather, fit for sultans. At the same time I fiddled with my EDC alox Cadet.
Lately I have many more fidgets all the sudden (I don't blame just kirky but the whole MTO, kirk is ofcourse a prominent member of MTO and takes his share). Spirit (music!), Charge TTi (OHO blades), Crunch (tight the screw and lock jaws), alox Harvester and now my Animus (sexy scales), Swisschamp (I open and close the fiscaler one handed), Juice (the bottle opener), Opinel (OHO) etc, you name it. Some times it's the Pocketwrench, spinning around and caressing the lustfull stainless steel.
But the real fidget, one that serves no other function other than reducing stress or boredom and producing delight is the MTO pocker chip. I love stainless steel but it gets cold and sometimes it isn't well finished and it has sharp edges. But the chip is perfect, in comfort temperature and feeling between silky and velvety, perfectly round and symmetric, it is the third best tactile experience after female skin and chinchilla.

Bump. I found some of these things in the living room today...im guessing the dog grabbed them out of my siblings room. They are quiet, but they look like 5 year old toys.

Dice. I absolutely love dice.  Just the classic 6 sided type. The clackier the plastic the better.

I EDC anywhere from 5-12 of them daily. I will squeeze three of them in my palm and kind of grind them on each other and roll them around. Or I will just cup them in my hand and rattle them a bit.

Rolling them is also the obvious fidget and time killer, and I do that too. And of course I do roll dice games with my friends at the bar often.

They probably are my most important edc item after blade, light, lighter, wallet, phone.

If you don't mind taking the time to learn a few simple games,  dice are extremely versatile entertainment.

And a lovely smooth and satisfyingly clackety fidget.

At home, chinese musical balls.

Meridian balls - Chinese balls, how to roll them #1

Now you made me start thinking of getting some at work, too.

They're great, right? Love the sound and the smooth feeling. I'll try to get some for work, there's a lot of chinese 1 Euro shops around.

This caused me to go on a great hunt to find my pair that I bought some 20 odd years ago. I had completely forgotten I had them. I did find them in an upstairs storage container. Now they have a spot in a curio cabinet.

I bought them at the time because I found them beautiful.

A little Leatherman information.

I have two pairs of those balls, an ornamental from some Chinese market that I bought about a decade ago and another one in stainless steel that was a corporate gift with a wooden base, that I have on my office desk. They are nice, I use the second occasionally. They are identical to those I see, China is the powerhouse of  globalization nowadays.

Those balls look awfully addictive.

I got an interesting fiddle pen recently:

The Usus. i pen. The two halves are held together with magnets, while the wave shaped interface lets the two halves connect in either the open or closed position. The main fiddle factor is that while holding it, one end can be flicked round 180 degrees from one open position to another, with a gentle thumb movement. Seeing how many times it can be flicked before it inevitably drops into the closed position.
I think I bought it for £11, so it's not too bad.

Another and even more fiddlable magnet pen is the Polar Pen: http://polarpen.com/
Basically it's made almost entirely from small magnets, allowing it's complete disassembly and rebuilding as something else. I'm debating whether to get one or not. I've been on a big pen bender for small and/or unusual pens, which will become apparent when I finally get round to doing some reviews.
Pictures of most of my work can be found on my Facebook Page.
Also have a look at my Shapeways Shop and SW Torch Shop for 3D printed items.

There is a name for that. And I can't remember what it is.

Did you assemble that particular "insert name here" or did you order one?

Any preference to bead material or rope material?

The name of the video should have been a hint. ;)  Begleri.  :D

The version with more beads is called Komboloi and is used a bit differently but KK should be able to explain it better.

Yup. Made that one years ago from two dice and a shoelace. I made a few with monkey balls too.

My bad. I don't see a name on Tapatalk, it's just a video that plays when I click on it!

I'd like to switch my EDC to full anodized titanium. I wonder If 2 titanium beads would be too loud for a college class? Monkeys Fist would be the next best option. I just hate tying them out of paracord!
