Both my car and my wife's car have basic emergency gear.
jumper cables
tow strap
tools: screw drivers, pliers, vise grips, cresent wrench, folding metal saw, Gerber hachet, Sawvivor saw, hose clamps, folding shovel, bunge cords, duct tape, fix a flat, tire gage
road flares, two 4AA battery powered red LED road flares
first aid kit
Surefire G2, Surefire SG1/ P60/ 6x123's, MiniMag with Luxeon I mod from The Sandwich Shoppe with lithium batteries, MiniMag with Opalec New Beam mod with lithium batteries, and my car also has a Surefire G2 LED in a pelican case

There's probably more, this is just what come to mind at the moment. We live in a very cold climate, so in the winter there is a lot of cold weather gear. Stuff like sleeping bags, stoves, fuel, clothes, boots,  food & water, etc.

My wife came home from work one day and said a coworker mentioned that she had a blanket and a candle in her car. My wife just scoffed and said you have no idea.  :D

ps: my car also has two 2C Mag lights and one 2D rayovac that have been modified to use 3x123 batteries with a KPR112 lamp. These are just some cheap old lights that I modified into brighter lights that use lithium batteries so that they are not affected so much by the cold and if I loan them out and don't get them back it's no great loss.

Sometimes I remember to leave the jack in the boot?

I'll be cleaning the car for the first time in 6 months this weekend - I'll tell you then what I've been carrying  :)

I have a toolbox with pliers, wrenches, sockets, multimeters, gloves, hammers, screwdrivers, tire plugging kit etc. Also have a bag with jumper cable, snatch strap, nylon strap, and a 12v tire pump (on loan to friend on roadtrip).

To follow-up:

Two lengths of rope, one of those wheel-nut tools (which doesn't actually fit my particular wheel nuts - go figure), about 20 pens that may or may not work, various bits of paperwork & out of date petrol vouchers, and a cheap multitool.

There's probably some interesting things the in the console & glove box, but I didn't get that far.

What do you keep in your car?
Pics please  :D

-SOG Powerlock
-Cheap tools in cheap toolbox
-Old and rusty axe
-Old and rusty folding shovel/pick
-Old climbing rope, 100+ feet
-Old blanket
-Old sleeping bag
-Old synthetic-insulated winter parka
-Old coveralls
-Several flashlights and headlamp
-Plastic tarp with paracord
-Collapsible plastic water cube
-Last but not least, plenty of plastic garbage bags

IMHO, it's hard to have too many plastic bags in your vehicle or rucksack.

The jumbo sized bags make suprisingly good emergency rain/windproof parkas, and two of them make a serviceable bivouac sack if your're forced to sleep out overnight.

You may have decent rain gear, but passengers and people found stranded along the road likely will not have decent rainproofs.

Jumbo trash bags also come in handy when you must put someone or something messy into your vehicle.  They work as expedient seatcovers and to wrap around messy, muddy items before putting them into the trunk or backseat.

The medium sized trash bags make quite good rainproof/snowproof gaiters and could prevent hypothermia or frostbitten feet during a forced walk in snow.

Medium trash bags also work well as VBL (Vapor Barrier Liner) vests and socks.  VBL clothing and sleeping gear can be amazingly effective - worth researching if you spend time out in cold weather because it could save your life in an emergency.

PS:  Forgot to mention big rubber bands and various lengths of paracord stored along with the trash bags.

Paracord works fine to make an adjustable waist belt for a trash bag parka in cold weather - cuts down on flapping and stops wind from blowing up into the torso area.  Short lengths of paracord and rubber bands will make elastic garters for holding up trash bag gaiters/overboots.

First of all my car is a 2007 Chevy Avalanche ( debadged 100%) with a hardwired 5 watt OnStar cell phone and a dash mount Garmin 250W GPS . In my line of work you can find just about any and everything in the a$$ end. Digging tools, rescue tools and line, space blankets, bunker ( fire fighting ) gear, NOMEX jumpsuit, full rimmed hardhat, locked tool box for big stuff  and a cloth tool bag for hand tools , a DIY 12 volt magnet lamp that plugs into the trailer wiring harness, and that's about it. In the cab I carry me, a modified 3 blade  SOG EOD Powertool, GLOCK Model 32  ( 357SIG ), Taurus 45LC/410 "The Judge", British bayonet, Spyderco R2, Wenger #16109 Micro Tool Chest, my iPod II ( plugs right into the factory radio - loaded with 33 hours of 1950/1960 music - i do take some LONG trips ), 12 MRE's, B+L binoculars, a couple flashlights, Panasonic digital camera, notepads, pens + pencils.  Next purchase is an Apple 17" MacBook Pro laptop to replace my PowerBook G4 which I sold.
