You can search for Ahti puukko, Roselli or  Tommi puukko.

Little of everything.

I'd love to contribute to this... however given that I'm Canadian by birth, and only somewhat recently discovered that my ancestry is definitely Scandinavian... well my great grandparents and many generations before are from Iceland, and before that back over to Norway/Denmark... and at some point both Ragnar Lothbrok and Bjorn Ironside are in my tree... as well as a pile of other Scandinavian "royalty" (Norway/Sweden/Denmark all appear at some point  :ahhh)

Given that English was my first language, and for a while I had French as a second, and now I've moved on to Spanish with a bit of Basque, it would be interesting to learn at least some Icelandic.

This is somewhat amusing considering that I married a Basque, and a bit shocking given that the man responsible (district commissioner - Ari Magnússon) is also in my lineage:

Icelandic is a phonetic pain in the posterior if you have learned the phonetics for Old Norse before learning about Icelandic. Though... I guess that's not too big a problem for most people outside Scandinavia. :D

At least it's safe for your SO to visit Iceland now. :D It's a small world, my SO is a linguist by education and is somewhat of a nerd when it comes to Basque on cause of its rather unique position in Europe. (Ergative, Pre-Indo-European, and so on...) Neither of us have any special connection to Iceland, though.

It was always safe... but now that "law" that no one has actually adhered to for the last several hundred years is finally repealed. But yes, it's safe now :D

It's pretty high on my list of places to go now that I've learned some of my heritage. Other things are a priority atm, but I do want to go out there for a trip at some point in the future.

Basque is pretty different. Also the fact that it varies a lot from area to area. Sadly apart from a few words here and there we don't actually speak it. My nephews and nieces here do however...

Go with IcelandAir the next time you go to Canada. They have very favorable rates for short stop-overs in Iceland for people crossing the Atlantic. A stop giving you enough time for visiting Reykjavik and doing a few things there cost pretty much (or perhaps exactly?) the same as a normal ticket.

I'm not really interested in a "stopover", I'd rather go there for at least a week if not two. Just a quick look and it would be a multi layover/hop flight just for that.

I had considered making it a roadtrip and driving up to Denmark and catching the ferry to Iceland, that way I have a vehicle and am not worrying about the rental car costs if I want to stay put for a few days.

I didn't even know there are still ferries going between Iceland and Denmark. Sounds like a trip you would prefer to do in summer. :)

Yeah I think Summer is an obvious time to go... I was also thinking it's probably not the kind of trip to do by myself, and also planning some camping, which my SO probably wouldn't be up for.
