When did this start?
on: December 16, 2014, 03:52:05 PM
So my mail man finally got off his lazy smurf and started bringing me some SAKs.

Looking at them I just noticed something. My Vic, Wenger and Alox are all different sizes?!

I know right? Before you dismiss this as the ravings of someone to long without sleep or beer look at this helpful picture I took for you.

See it is true.

Discuss.

Yup, always been that way.  That's my only real attraction to the Wenger traditional SAKs, the smaller size.

Vics are 91mm

Alox is 93mm

Viva la difference!

Bruce Hornsby once said 'That's just the way it is'. I think that applies here.

Right?

Weird they would not have a press release or something though.

Pretty big change to just sneak out there.

Bruce was always a bit vague about the different sizes. He'd sing 'That's just the way it is' until the press went away.

Not really a change. As stated.. it pretty much always started like this...
Some sak-guru can probably explain better, but the answer lies in how they developed. Alox developed off the Soldier, Vic and Wenger developed off the Officer's knife.
Originally both the Soldier and Officer were 100 mm (hope I'm not mistaking).
In 1951 the 93 mm Fibrox Soldier's Knife replaced it, which was replaced with the 93 mm Alox.
The Officer's Knife was replaced with the 91 mm Standard, which was replaced with the 91mm Spartan which is the matrix for most saks nowadays...

SAK Gurus please forgive any inaccuracies...  ::)

At one time both Victorinox and Wenger offered complete lines of 84mm/85mm (3 1/4") and 91mm (3 1/2") knives. Wenger eventually went to all 84mm size; while Victorinox concentrated on 91mm (they still offer a few 85mms). Why? I suspect product differentiation played a large part in it.

For what its worth my EDC is a Wenger Traveler (84mm). I find the 84s ride better in my pocket, and none of the current 85mm Vics offer a scissors.  Out in the field I often stick a 91mm Vic Huntsman in my pocket.

There's also 58mm, 65mm, 74mm, 100mm, 108mm, 111mm, 120mm, 130mm, and a few others too.

But to answer your original question of when this started .... about 130 years ago! C'mon catch up  :pok: :D

Now you are just being silly. I know when SAKs started being made.

Get with the program fiddy. This thread is about the recent change that only I noticed before now.

Serious business. We have to send a message to Vic that we will not stand for this willy nilly change.

Fight the power! The struggle is real.
