Whats best new or old?

I recently got to have a close look at a new style magnifyer versus the old style found on my 15 year old Swisschamp

, and despite being less powerful, I think the newer one is the more useable of the two

Whats your opinion on the subject

New for sure! I get a lot of grief for preferring the new mag. over on the SOSAK forum

Yes the old one is glass as opposed to plastic but I've not managed to mark the plastic magnifier on my Cybertool Lite and its seen plenty of use in the last few years.
The old one is more powerful but at a cost, its field of view is (IMO) very limited.
Best of all the new one can be used as a magnifier where as the old one really needs to be held to the eye and used more like a jewellers loupe.

I'll prepare for the flaming now, no worries, I'm used to it

, like you say, the original magnifyer only really works with your eye practically next to the glass, the new seems a more practical general magnifyer

I needed to read something small a little while ago, and the old style magnifier was terrible. Too much power with too small a viewing area. So the new one should be better for reading anyway.

On the other hand, I can burn stuff with the old style magnifier quite easily....

The old one is more powerful, the new one has a wider field of view.

The new one is easier to use as a substitute for forgotten reading glasses.

Its easier to concentrate the sun on the old one, easier to make fire.

I believe the older one has the casing, i.e. glass lens with a blue plastic casing. I think the newer one is just one big piece of plastic.

I've just discovered that my Swisschamp has the old style magnifier is this sufficient excuse to buy a new sak to compare the two?
