another unknown SAK
on: December 23, 2014, 06:53:48 PM
I have another Victorinox i cant seem to identify. at first i thought it was a Signature I, but theres no scissors.

any idea? its the same size as a classic. it has the removable pen instead of the toothpick as shown.

also, is there a site that you choose the tools on the knife and get a list of models with those tools? this would help in identifying these knifes for Novices like myself. (it could also help in finding the "perfect" knife as well)

Nice find. I'd say Vintage II, similar to the current Scribe.

Go to the history tab under Scribe.

Quote
History
The Scribe was first available in 2003. It appears to be the identical knife to the earlier Vintage II model, which as a different Victorinox AN, but the SABI number is the same. It appears that as the Escort replaced the Vintage, so did the Scribe replace the Vintage II.

And for the pen

Removable Pen

Victorinox's first pen was included in the 58mm Signature series of knives. First released in 1993, it replaced the toothpick in the scales. The removable-pen is very short, not more than 50mms, and extremely thin. Its thickness is comparable to the replaceable refill in a standard ballpoint pen. The small diameter and overall minuteness of the pen makes it fairly impractical for extended use. It was discontinued in favor of a new retractable pen design.

That's why I said similar. ;)

Could it just be an escort someone put a pen in?

Doubt it. Those pens aren't that easy to find.

it appears to make the change to add the pen, the scales would also have had to have been switched, the scales for the pen is thicker, and the notch is more narrow.

of coarse, this is possible. but it seems Enki_ck is on track with the Vintage II. I cant find one for sale anywere to visually confirm, but it seems to logically make sense.

For current models: http://www.victorinox.com/ch/content/toolfinder/category/Category/100

For older models - nope. Closest thing is http://www.sakwiki.com/tiki-index.php
Corwyn of Multitool, the First of His name, King of Victorinox, King of Leatherman, Gerber and the First Generation SOG, Lord of the Seven Wrenches, Protector of the Forum, Khal of the Bushes, called Corwyn Toolborn, the Unsharpened, Father of SAKs.

I can find the regular Vintage in '89 and '93 catalogs but no Vintage II as we're regretfully missing most of the '90s catalogs. :-\

I'll wait for the 58mm collectors like SM5000 and ColoSwiss with more inside on this to comment before I add it to the wiki. I wouldn't remove the advertising just yet.

We don't have much info on this knife, if any at all. Some knives were done exclusively as advertising knives like the Physician knife, Pharmacy Knife or Pharmaceutical Rambler. So we might find out for whom it was made and it would be more valuable as a collectors piece in its original condition.

I know I've seen that ad before on eBay, but I can't remember the tool set involved.

Alright... after re-reviewing a few things on the wiki and my notes, I'm inclined to think this is an early model Vintage II.  Obviously it's custom scales with the advertising.

According to the Wiki the Scribe was first available 2003, but the retractable pen was available in 1999, that's why I'm leaning toward Vintage II.
