FINISHED!!!!
on: December 25, 2014, 11:03:39 PM
It took me till 9:30PM on Christmas Day, but at least my niece will be able to get her Christmas Present tomorrow

... and here it is with the plaque fitted and filled with "treasure" (more presents)

To be honest it isn't actually finished at all, but thankfully she's too young to notice  :P I only managed to get one protective coat on it, so I need to smuggle it back at some point, flat off the preliminary coat and give it another couple of finishing coats. I just hope she doesn't wreck it too much before she gets old enough to understand the meaning of the words "sentimental value"  :D :D

Phew! I need a beer ....  :drink:

That's an awesome present she'll remember for years for sure. :hatsoff:

Thanks guys. It was made from some 6x1 planed oak I'd got left over from the boat. Should last her many years hopefully. Not sure how much she'll appreciate it just yet, but I know she'll just love the stuff inside anyway :D

I'll let you know what her reaction is tomorrow  ;)

Will she get a treasure map first telling her the location of the chest? :D

I did consider that but she's only 3.1/2, and Uncle Alan hasn't taught her map reading skills yet  :D :D

What a wonderful gift and terrific workmanship.  These are the type gifts kids appreciate on many levels.  As youngsters they like the way it looks, as tweens they appreciate it for a cool "hiding" place for her stuff, as a teen/college age they may like the extra storage space of a refuge for special items, when they become adults and look back on this wonderful chest they'll be reminded what a amazing gift they'd received, and when she's a mom she'll pass this on as a treasured part of her possessions.

That was the plan  :tu: The plaque I had engraved and mounted inside the lid had her full name on, and said it was from me and dated Christmas 2014. Hopefully that will mean more and more to her as time goes by.

Well, she has it now. We had a meal today round at my parents, and the little one was there with my Brother and Sis-in-law. We ate first, and afterwards I told her I'd made her something for Christmas and her little eyes lit up. I fetched in in from the car, and after she'd unwrapped it,and all the pressies inside, she spent the rest of the afternoon sat with me and being quite dismissive of everyone else.

At one point she was sat on my knee munching on some chocolate, and we were all just talking about general stuff. Out of the blue she wrapped her arms around me, gave me a big chocolatey kiss on the cheek, and said "I love my treasure chest". She then snuggled into my shoulder and stayed there for about ten minutes.

Looks like she appreciated it more that I thought  :D

That's awesome. So much better than noisy plasticky rubbishy presents that will be in the bin well before next Christmas.

Beautiful work Al.  I'm glad to hear that she loved it, and I'm sure her appreciation will grow as she does and she realizes how much craftsmanship went into it and how much nicer it is than generic cuddly toys off the shelf.

Thanks again guys  I really appreciate your comments  :salute:

I have enough left oak over to make another one for myself, though I'm tempted to try going all manual (no power tools) and maybe even try my hand at dovetailing too. It'll probably end up being a never ending project on that basis, but there's no deadline with this one like there was on the first one
