LM Core Army Issue?
on: July 15, 2008, 06:59:31 PM
Here is a pick of a LM Core I have. I'm pretty sure its an army issue stamp, but if anyone could identifiy it, that would be great.

That's interesting. The 3-lines forming a triangle-shape and the "UTD" might be a clue to the answer of where it came form. I couldn't find anything about it though.

According to the fine folks at Leatherman, all of whom put their heads together for this one:

The first string of numbers is the National Stock Number (NSN) for Leatherman Core.  This most likely came from GSA (General Services Administration), who sells to the military.

The last two digits are likely to represent the year - (20)07.  Don't know about the middle part, or the arrow.  And we don't know why anyone would engrave the NSN onto the tool.

(Image removed from quote.)

One thing for sure the "^" is a british MOD stamp

Some run from breaks of ice, and answer none:
And some condemned for a fault alone." -William Shakespeare, King Lear (1608), Act IV, scene 6, line 169

The "arrow head" is known as the "crow's foot" and does indeed denote that it was British military issue.

I think the number is the NATO stock number - I think I read that somewhere.....

My Core also bears this identical stamp.

My Supertool 200 has: 5110995735003^UTD06.

Where did you get the Core from cryptick?

I used to come here a lot.

Well that's cool!

Is the camera correcting for color or are the spacers in the handle black instead of the usual grey?

AFAIK, Australia has the BO SwissTool complete with serial number stampings.

The American Military has a wide variety of tools that can be issued or purchased through Military channels. A good idea of what is offered is to check out a National Stock Number (NSN) list like this one. I've heard from primary sources that SuperTools, Waves, Gerber MP600s and MPTs were issued to specific MOS' and specific units. But there isn't a definitive list or anything like that.

So American army's issue depends on what base or unit they are in?
Swiss army issues swisstools now instead of the regular SAks?
Thanks for the info.

So American army's issue depends on what base or unit they are in?

Probably more along the lines of what unit and what job you have (Military Occupational Specialty- MOS). I would assume that communications MOS would be more apt to have a multi issued to them than an Infantryman. Although it seems to me that one can request items from supply (multis, flashlights, etc.) and get them depending on some calculation of need/how much the supply Sargent likes you. So potentially any multi with a NSN could be an issue item in the American military.

A few of our members were in the military so they may know more about the acquisition chain than I do.

Well that's cool!

Is the camera correcting for color or are the spacers in the handle black instead of the usual grey?
Camera's fault Spoon, the spacers are the normal grey
