Why no love for the Vic Rally?
on: January 07, 2015, 01:19:10 PM
Hi guys & gals!

I´ve just been thinking about my keychain setup. I´ve had many many different 58mm SAKs or on comparible sizes on them. Just until yesterday a VIC Minichamp was there. But it just lost its place on the Vic Rally http://www.sakwiki.com/tiki-index.php?page=Rally . I´ve pocket carried this one sometimes when I was just around the house or next to a traditional slippie.

I´m just wondering as the toolset is quite useful and plenty of tools on this little bugger, and rarely people seem to carry or even appreciated it. Is there anything I don´t see? Or is it just an underrated pattern by Vic?

I really like it and I would like to hear your opinions on that one.

For a bit of extra thickness you can get scissors, in the rambler/manager, which is popular.

Also the classic, with the scissors, dominates the thin end of the market, as people seem to like having scissors more than the bottle opener and screwdriver.

If I ever downsized from my keychain Minichamp I would go with a Rally.
The caplifter gets more use than scissors on a normal day.
I am pretty sure you don't see many Rally's cause Vic doesn't market them as heavily as the Classic.

The Rally looks great ... it's just missing the scissors  :D Rambler/Manager rules supreme  :D :D

Speaking for myself, I like the extra blade, and the scissors that the Minichamp brings.

I haven't found the extra layer to be an issue. I don't carry it on my keyring however. I have it clipped onto a single AAA light and rides in my front left pocket.

Thanks for the disussion so far. :)

I like the Rally because I don´t need scissors too much on a SAK of this size.

I have had the Manager/Rambler but didn´t carry it too much. But I didn´t get warm on it. I think I gonna give it another try, but not for keyring carry; just a pocket carry tool.

On the Classic I really miss the bottleopener, philipshead screwdriver.

I hardly ever use scissors, thats why I carry a 91mm without (CT 29). But as a result, I like having scissors on my 58, just in case and thats why its Rambler (Midnight Manager to be precise) for me.
It wouldn't be the internet without people complaining.

I really like the toolset of the Rally, I just wish the key ring was at the other end. As it is now, it is more impractical when using the blade. I think only the Rambler derivatives, the Escort and the MiniChamp has the key right at the end I prefer, opposite the direction of the unfolded blade.

Aside from a short stint with an a lox classic, the rally has been my got to keychain tool for going on three years now. sure, I've been eyeing a rambler, but to be honest i don't use the scissors all that often. the small slim blade on the rally does most of my precise cutting jobs with ease.

Here it is alongside some some recent leatherwork:

Here it is with an older keychain setup:

The small philips and toothpick are what keeps it close at hand.
Looking for a Vic Tourist with a metal HILTI inlay.

Another vote for scissors. They're the most used implement on my Rambler.

I vote Rogue.  Rally/Rambler Phillips combo tool is good, but I don't like the SD tip on the nail file.  Normal nail file with flat tip combo tool will handle most small Phillips and flat screws.  Flat tip combo tool is beefier and can be used for #2 Phillips anyway.  Just my 2 cents worth  :salute:

Rally is fine but I look to my 58mm to have scissors so I can carry Pioneers and Spartan 91mm's if I feel the desire.

I also can't imagine one more 58mm layer is that noticable.

If it was not discontinued it would have been in the running for my keychain SAK for sure. Except that the name of the sAK reminds me of Monrogue and that makes me

I have a rally and quite like it - it's between the Rally and the Rambler for favourite at this size, with the Rambler slightly having the edge as the extra width for the scissors is minimal. I do not have too many of this size, though, as they a bit small for my hands!

Discontinued, but not that rare. I got one in October for 10 Euros... there are 8 now on eBay at the 25ish USD mark...

I like the classic, but I like the cap lifter/philips driver.

Since maybe the MOSt used tool on any MT I carry is scissors, it kind of rules out the Rally. If I didn't want scissors, though... it would be right in there.  :tu:

Since I DO like the scissors... it's Rambler for me.

Anyone who wants a red Rogue, PM me. It'll be a while before I could get the emerald ones again. These would have the regular blade, not the emergency blade.

I thought the Rogue had a blade, nail cleaner, scissors and combo tool?

Sorry, Rover. I always get the two mixed up. The Rally with the older combo tool.
