Opinel Multitools overview
on: January 11, 2015, 02:54:28 PM
Opinel does make some blade based multitools and seem keen to expand the range even more.
Apart from basic folding knives they also make some nice cooking knives (fixed blades) saws, folding knives with a variety of blades in various metals, including Damascus, and fancy handles .

For those that are not aware here is a small overview of some of their multi-purpose offerings

From the top,
their corcksrew model, build on the No10 frame, with a large blade,

the DIY electrician model with spear blade, wire stripper and cutter and screwdriver bits build on the No9 frame with a small blade,

the mushroom knife build on the No8 frame with a small pruner style blade, ergonomic handle and brush and

the Outdoor model, build on the No8 frame with partially serrated blade with turning notch and whistle.

They are all good, decent tools, around the 20 Euro mark.

The corkscrew model is too big, and so is the DIY, for what they offer.
The Outdoor could have been made bigger, since it was marketed as a hard use tactical knife

They are all SS, in the picture.
The two newer ones have plastic handles, something that Opinel fans have been asking for years, to avoid the potential issues arising when the handles get wet.

The DIY could have been smaller, as the blade is short.
The Outdoor would look menacing on the No 12 frame with a thicker blade.

If you have access to the corresponding standard models, woiuld you mind taking pics of the DIY with a No. 9 and Outdoor with a No. 8?
Nice roundup and I am still thinking about getting a DIY but would like to handle it first.

Just: the corkscrew model - works fine, unnecessary large.
Mushroom knife - works fine

Other opinels that I use cut well too

I love Opinels.  I got a No 2 when I was about thirteen or fourteen and I carried it everywhere in the watch pocket of my jeans... until it got lost.  Then I got a No 3 and enjoyed that for a few years until it got lost too.

I have the DIY and it seems a bit bulky for what it is, but I do like it.  Like any Opinel, you would be hard pressed to find more knife for the money!

Here's a standard model Opinel #8 with plastic handle - they do exist even though they are hard to find.

Do the knives with bits have metal frames or do the bits to into the handle directly? I would imagine you can't put much torque on them

It is a hard composite material, not metal but, many screwdrivers have plastic handles too and can be used hard.
The bits feel solid during regular use.
