I looked around a bit and this has come up a few times.  I am still making fire pretty easily using my kit and have since gotten really interested in the fire piston.  There are some inexpensive ones for sale on fleabay but where's the fun in pre-made.

I saw a great video and a follow up video of a lady who was IMO terrific in showing how to make one on the cheap.  I'm going to buy the material this friday and make one and see how it goes.

Here is the video and she does give the original guy his props for this very neat and very easy ( I hope ) fire piston.

Now this one method that I have not used. I think I will try to make one and give it a go. Thanks for posting the video.

Opps double posted

Yes it was by far the easiest fire piston and the least expensive one as well to make I've seen.  There are ones that sell for $24 US on fleabay and I may pick on up but I enjoy projects like this.

Thats neat DIY!

I wouldn't use vaseline though on o-rings, silicone grease is probably better.

The only kickstarter project I ever participated in was for a fire pison. Its cool looking but I never did actually try it.

I got a couple and they work great.   Very compact.  I wish the guy was still making them though.  Sparxgear, I think

Alright I made the fire piston in the video however there were some issues.  My drill is a POS and I wasn't able to drill the dowel.  I did however get it to ignite char cloth.  I was successful one time as I believe the o ring needed to make a tighter seal.  I'll make some adjustments and proceed.

It was totally fun to do and $16 total spent and I'll have enough stuff to get 2 done.

Sorry no picture of the ember I was excited and honestly quite surprised since I was unsuccessful on a number of tries.

Nice fire piston MrW,

So mistake on my part as to why my fire piston wasnt working every time.

I didn't seal the oak dowel  simple because I thought that was a cosmetic step.  The oak is porous and is where air will escape the chamber thus preventing the ignition.  The dowel needs to bounce back when inserting it in the copper tube or you don't have a seal.

It's a really neat way to start fire and a great project ( inexpensive ) for the kids as well.

Actually,

Here's mine:

With char cloth in the bowl:

Bad shot of the red ember ::)

It's fairly easy to get a glowing ember.  Getting it to ignite tinder is a little trickier. :-\

Let me try that again,

Nice fire piston Syph and MrW.

I put the ember onto a piece of char cloth that sat on top of dryer lint which worked ok.  I'm going to try to use jute string/rope next time and see how that goes.

I got this thing dialed in more or less.  It's still has a very slight air leak so 3 of 5 attempts are successful.  I think I need a better fitting o ring.  I'll spray it again also with the clear acrylic. Here are a few attempts that got my char cloth lit.

It's very fun to make fire this way especially while watching HellBoy  :tu:

This seem to be a quite new way to start flames. I have not used this in the past. But I would definitely would like to use it once.
If I need to pick some good EDC tools.
Then I would take my love leatherman multi tool wave and a flash light. Other are just a waste !!!
