Great mod! I've never really liked my rebar for some reason but I do like that toolset and especially what I consider to be a better plier head on there!

Thanks John  I'm not a fan of the Rebar blades ... they just don't fill me with confidence. I tried to put one in from a Fuse but it's too long, so I went completely knifeless instead. I also had to drop the can opener and lanyard lood, but a BO can opener is a bad idea anyway. As for the pliers ... yeah, I prefer these to the indexable ones too

HELP!

I'm doing the same mod as Al did, except in SS. On Al's advice I got a set of the fancy engineers pliers off Amazon. The screw on the PE blade slide has come out sweet as a nut. The pivot barrel is indented making it nice and easy.

Seems like the SE side has a fully round pivot barrel as its rotating freely. Without getting a second set of engineers pliers how can I get a decent grip on the knurled screw?

Crunch, or a good firm grip on a Wave works for me. Have you tried heat to break the Loctite?

Just a heads up, John .... I think I'm going to need to take mine apart and play with it again. I'm really not happy with the way the file is catching, and the tools keep slopping out of the tool on that side a bit (kind of like on your Gerber Fit). I think I need to add more washers on that side to create more clearance, but that is going to overfill the pivot pin which means it won't locate fully in the opposing handle. The saw side as I have it configured is working fine.

This needs to go back to the proverbial drawing board for a rethink before I'll be fully happy with it. If you get a configuration you are happy with, give me a yell and let me know what you ended up with

Hey Kirky Boy, you got yours done yet?
Same set up as mine, or have you put them back in a different order?

Thanks for bumping this, somehow I had missed it.

About to start on a MT for the kids which I had wanted to be knifeless but they are insisting on a blade.  ::)

How you got any pics showing the ends?

Funny you bump this tonight,I just got the second set of tools out. I'm watching the end of Smileys People on BBC4,and I might have a go at assembly.

I'll get back to you later with a progress report :tu:

Not showing the ends, Zoidie ... what is it you're wanting to see? Sequence of tools? If it's where you need to put the washers, that's a work in progress as the file is fouling on mine  ;)

Well,I got the Rebar rebuilt last night.

I used Al's tool load as a guide, but changed one or two things due to fit issues...

On one side, starting from the cutaway is two slim washers;file;slim washer;phillips;scissors;can opener.

The other side is large washer;saw;awl;bit driver;small screw driver

I went with the Rebars small flat driver simply because I didn't have a Fuse type to substitute. I'm still puzzled by this, because I'm sure I've got one some where

I just couldn't get a smooth enough operation of tools on the file side with the large flat driver, but the can opener is a slight thinner.

I'd been disappointed last night with the overall smoothness of movement of the tools, but I've been playing with it while writing, and while it's nowhere near as good as my modded Fuse or stock Blast,it's not all that bad. To be fair,I wasn't over impressed with it before hacking it

I'll post pics later.

I might pull out my Kick at the weekend, and have another look at things ???

I'm also considering going the whole hog and fitting Wave type pliers  That would make it Kirkys Fubar?

I have Wave type pliers in mine already ... cap crimper ones as it happens. I'll have a play around with the load out when I get chance, as the file on mine was not just catching the handles, but the adjacent tool too ... although for some reason that didn't happen when I first built it, it kind of crept in afterwards ...

I'll have a faff around and see what happens. Thanks for the update John

No worries Al. Funnily,my file was catching and grating more last night than it did today. Gotta say though, getting into the guts of the Rebar hasn't endeared it to me in any way. It's just not as well built as the old PST or the Zytel tools

I've got to agree with you there mate. Those handles are covered in hotspots too. Mine will be getting slung in some form of kit for emergency use only. I really can't see any logical reason to subject myself to a Rebar on a regular basis, even though I've modded it to get rid of a lot of the issues

I've just been giving my Re-Furbed a couple of coats of looking at. The file was almost solid now the tools have "settled in", and most definitely needs an extra washer or two. I also note that you have dispensed with the large flat driver, which is fatter than the can opener you used instead, by roughly the thickness of the extra washer I need

As mine is a BO model, I have no interest in fitting/using the can opener (or certainly not of food packaging), which leaves me in a bit of a dilemma as to how to generate the extra internal space for the standoff washers. The most obvious solution (whilst maintaining the BO finish) is ditch the bit driver or phillips and a put the blades back in. I certainly don't have a shortage of knifeless tools and sub 3" slippie tools to choose from these days, and I'd still have the benefits of the semi-sensible pliers and scissors over the stock model.

My logic was,as you say, that the can opener is that bit thinner than the flat driver, and having the bit driver,I can always load up with a wide flat bit, well that and the fact I've a Pocketwrench fairly close to had at work for prying, which is mostly what I'd use the big driver for.

Besides, there's always some numpty in the lunch room who ends up needing a can opener

Full marks to you for your choice of tools. Sounds like you've got it completely sussed for your needs mate. I'm at a bit of a crossroads with this one, wondering how much effort it's worth, considering it'll still have the hotspots on the handles, and that slight cheap tinny feel to it.

That's almost the sad thing: I do know pretty much what I need! The Rebar, albeit in its current format is slight over kill(the saw).

Pity LM won't save us the effort

They did for a little while, been looking for a knifeless fuse forever, snagged one at the weekend, arrived today.

Needs a little clean, otherwise all good.

I prefer the look of the mods you guys are doing!
