I was in scouts and made it to Life.  Then cars and girls got in the way

A neighbor took me to troop meetings every Thursday. Made star, then the best scoutmaster retired and some druggies took over.
Still some of my fondest memories camping, hiking,  and "community projects".

I didn't participate until I was eligible for Boy Scouts. Was a Patrol Leader, Senior Patrol Leader and finally walked away as a Life Scout when I was 13.

I enjoyed my experience very much and do sometime wish I has stayed with it to Eagle. High School activities just pull me away quickly.

I wish I had joined, but I had to many problems back then, I asked the kids if they would join but neither really gave it thought, heck I bought my older one his first sak when he turned 12, the same one my grandfather bought me when I turned 12, and I think I've used his sak more then he has. The little guy on the other hand can't wait for his first sak let alone to even join this forum, his only problem is joining something, great at first but then looses interest and moves onto something else.. Canoeing on the Current River in Missouri. Hiked a good piece of Philmont Scout Ranch in 1965. Went down to Mexico with the Explorers the following year. Made Eagle in 1967.

One of the reasons I like SAKs is they epitomize the Boy Scout motto "Be Prepared".

Atleast yall were allowed to use duct tape!

We were a "rope  only" kinda deal.

That didn't stop us from tying the first person to fall asleep around the campfire to their camp chair. Oh man their reaction as they were lifted into the air was HILARIOUS

It could be worse! Football atleast gets him a little time outside.

The little one will hopefully settle on the right thing! I bet he keeps your house quite on edge.

Oh yeah!  We were stuck on Treasure Island Scout camp in the middle of the Delaware River for four days once because a storm froze the river enough that boats couldn't make it across to get us.  Guess how we opened the emergency rations on hand......

At summer camp our favorite bit of "educating" younger scouts to respect their seniors was to tie them into their cots and gag them, then put them directly underneath the garbage bags that were hung off the ground to keep them away from raccoons.  The muffled screams as the 'coons climbed on them to get to the garbage were worth it.  Our leaders at the time were all Vietnam vets, and didn't have any problems at all with our teaching techniques.

I remember a Scoutmaster of mine, was a retired First Sergeant in the Big Red One.  He checked up on us once in a lean-to in the middle of the night and caught us drinking Jim Beam and playing poker.  His requirement to not say anything was a good slug off the bottle.  ::)

Still have my old Imperial Cub Scout and Boy Scout knives. The Boy Scout knife has been rusted and cleaned so often its blued. Same as the old Schrade and K-Bar Stockmen I carried for years. When I first encountered SAKs I was amazed; they didn't rust!

Omg you have no clue!! The older one is still out, he went over a friends house after weight training, the little guy went over his friends, but him and his friend just walked in the door in order to spend the night over here, yay! JR

Yall might think this is odd. But my scout master was a female. Our troop was VERY uptight.

If you wore a Class A (Dress Shirt) you either wore it right or took it off.

We wore matching Class B (T shirts) every weekday at scout camp.

Any knifes had to be smaller than your palm, no fixed blades.

If your patches weren't up to date at the time of Court Of Honor; you didn't get your awards that night.

A lot of people will say a female leader just "isn't scouting" but I must say I've seen some leaders so terrible that they were kicked out of camps for a lifetime. And ours held us to high enough standards that probably 3/4 of all the kids that went through the troop made eagle.

We were very well behaved, always helped the camp an extra day after everyone left.

Now what happened whrn they weren't around.......was a different story.

^^Oh please, my mother was a District Commissioner.  She can field strip an M1 Garand blindfolded faster than me, and still has better camping gear than I do.  In really cold weather, she still bitches about frostbite on two of her toes that she got once upon a time on a camping trip.  She actually met the man who would become my stepfather years later during a Klondike Derby.  I've got a story about the first time I met him that makes her crack up and him turn red involving a CJ5, a bit of mud, and a tree that's a Scouting legend in NJ........

Sure was.

I also made Star before I discovered girls and the rest as they say is history.

Some very good memories from my years and a Cub and Boy Scout. We were a very active Troop and did tons of weekend trips and such.

Thinking about the induction ceremony to Order of the Arrow now, good stuff.
