Homemade engineer pliers
on: January 30, 2015, 08:58:35 PM
I had a heck of a time getting the knurled screws out of my Rebar for a scissor mod I'm going to do when they get here. I got them loose with Vise grips and needle nose pliers but not before a few smurfs and a couple blood blisters later. I looked at the engineer pliers on Amazon and they looked like they were the ticket but then I thought to myself lets see if I can modify a pair of old needle nose pliers to grip the knurled screw better. With a bit of grinder and dremel work after some trial and error this is what I came up with. They're not pretty but seem to grip really well !

Do they slip?

I recently tried Japanese Enginner pliers and they're truly a god send.  :tu:
EDC and OCD. A wicked mix.

They haven't slipped yet. I just loosened the other side of my Rebar and then tightened it back up. I'm sure the engineer pliers are awesome. I just didn't want to spend the money if I didn't have to for this one mod. If I decide to really get into modding I will get a pair.

Great vision. :salute:

From your picture they seem to fit inside the shoulder which is the real Rebar difficulty.  Still to be convinced that the stock Engineer Pliers fit 360deg without grinding.   Maybe babola will clarify.

I even used a modified dremel bit for modding the pliers to mod the multi tool

I bought a pair of cheapo self gripping wrenches for my first attempt at a Rebar mod.  Wasn't very successful and eventually I made one screw a snake-eye and cut a slot in the other.  Since then fitted Wingman screws.

This wrench was particularly poor but thanks to your great idea it may yet prove useful.  Plus I prefer tools that don't snap shut when (or if) they slip.

Just need a spell of bad weather now.  On its way I believe.

Good to know the Wingman screws work, I had thought about using my Sidekick screws for easier reassembly.

Just need to be turned down a little to clear the shoulder.  And shortened a tad IIRC.

Not had time to do SteveC's excellent mod to my self-gripping pliers but have invested in the frequently referred to engineer's pliers.    There is a position where they just grip on the Rebar bolt side (is that the thin side?).   The turned down pliers must be brilliant.  Need to find time.

The MP600 BN pliers are close to working on the Rebar and great where there is no lip such as Fuse.  I already had a small notch for gas meter cabinet spindle relief.   That really works well with accessible knurled screws.  Except of course that I was nipped when it slipped.  Stupid of me  Why I am keen on a self gripping version.

Acknowledging SteveC who provided the inspiration, I wanted to do a self-gripping version as I don't much like getting nipped.   So a self-gripping "safety" home-made engineers pliers, also "economic" with only a single ground down arm.
