Stanley Adventure Cook Set
on: February 12, 2015, 08:37:05 PM
We all love eating while on the trail right?  I typically bring easy to "make" food when I'm going to be out over 3 hours cause I tend to get dizzy and well cause I'm a food whore.

I was looking for a simple set up that didn't break the bank.  This set up needed to be easy to carry and be an all in one set up or something that can be added to very simply to add capability.

I ended up getting the Stanley Adventure Cook Set at wallyworld for $15US.  The set included a SS pot with lid, 2 plastic cups, and a removable handle that holds everything together nicely.

The pot has measurement markings on the side up to 20oz but the pot holds 28oz no problem.  It is a single wall SS pot however its rather sturdy.

The cups are 10z and stow inside the pot very easily with room for other items.  They are made from BPA free plastic that will hold boiled wate without melting or disfiguring.

The lid fit nice on the pot with some holes that allow for straining.  There is a plastic handle tab that seems out of place on it and mine as seen heat damage.  The lid will also fit GSI cups and fit my cheapie ozark trail SS cup perfectly.

The handle is great and I've not had any issues with it being too hot to hold.  It flips over the top of the lid and pot and locks it all together nicely.

Over all I think the pot is a terrific piece of gear at a good price.  What nice is if you decide you dont want to use the plastic included cups the use the space in the pot to stow other camp cook items.  The pot will accept the 32oz Guyat designed/Nalgene tapered SS bottle within and a GSI or similar cup will fit under the pot making for quite an effect set up.

So far I dont really have to many complaints other than the plasic tab on the lid.  The pot has done really well in a camp fire on hot coals, under my $5 stove, and with an alcohol can stove so the versatility is on par IMO with more expensive options.

The first pictures are what you get.  I took off the handle because of how I carry my cook set.

I dont use the second cup so I can store my $5 stove and my soda can stove along with some other things.  As you can see the cheap SS ozark trail cup fits great under the pot.

I don't have the Guyat Design/Nalgene tapered SS bottle that would fit inside but then I also would need to find another way to carry the stoves and other stuff I put inside.  I forgot to show the lighter that lives inside the orange case and the alcohol bottle that also fit within.

Hey that's what I use too. Love that pot and like you said, does not break the bank.

I saw the Condor H2O pouch/bag that would accommodate this set up but when at the fleamarket I saw the Rothco bag for a great price with shoulder strap so I got it.  I'll post about my thoughts on the bag in another thread.

The pot fits however I needed to take off the handle as it grabbed the inside of the bag when pulled out.  The cheap SS cup also fits but what a PITA to take out.  I tend to not bring the SS cup as I use the plastic one that came with the set.

My first aid kit/boo boo kit fits nice on top of the pot within the space .  I like not having too much unneeded stuff inside that compartment when I can fit most inside the pot.  You can see if I really wanted to stuff that compartment I still have room at the top even with my FAK.  I keep a bandana inside there as well ( not shown ).  I added the belt to this set up to take any weight off my shoulder but without water this set up is not heavy at all YMMV.  I also like having the belt around my waist to carry my fixed blade and MT.

You can also see the Condor Molle Gadget pouch and a Smoke Grenade pouch on the Rothco bag.  I keep a fire kit in the Condor along with a SAK, light and some other things ( I'll post more on that in another thread ).  You might see pepper spray as well attached to the bag.  I carry that for stray dogs or rabbid squirrels as well as a deterrent to stupid people on the trail.

I can keep the fire kit in the Smoke Grenade pouch along with other useful items like a 230grm butane/propane fuel canister.  Here are my fire kits that I'll typically bring since I like to practice my fire skills.  I wont go into detail about my fire kits as the are mostly the same as what been done.

Thanks for having a look.

The SS cheap cup was $5 the bag was $12.  I'd say pretty frugal set up IMO and most important a solid set up so far.  We all like to tweak our gear so it will evolve but I think only slightly.

Excellent MOD to your pot.  The great thing is you can do these type MODs and expand how to use this pot.  I do have SS bottles but I don't like to put them inside the pot. I'd rather carry them separately.

Here's my usual setup, mostly just boiling water for freezer bag meals.  But I like a separate cup for coffee/drinks, so I found a GSI insulated mug on sale.  Stove, lighter, etc. inside.

I like that the Stanley setup has a lid, would be worth checking out for that price.

I wanted to try something that had good reviews and was versatile.  This set was the one that kept coming up so I got it and I cannot fault it.  If you are an ultralight backpacker then I can see going with something else but for day hikes and camping this is hard to beat for the money.  It worked great on my coleman stove and with the alcohol stove I needed a grate to put over so the flames didn't shoot up the sides also worked great.  I'm getting one for my daughter as well not that I've had some time with it.

The Rothco bag has a front pouch that works good for such items.  I can use the Smoke Grenade Pouch for food as its adjustable, the back part can be raised to accommodate taller items.

A #3 can's top will work as a lid on my cheap SS cup.  Have a look as I'm sure it will fit your GSI.

Solid set up and a great size.  The Stanley set is good for 2 or one pig like me ,  I like to have enough water for a beverage and my food.

I had a hard time getting DIY alcohol stoves to operate efficiently with the Stanley. I could not get it to meet the 16oz boil on 1oz or less of fuel standard that I go by. In the end I went with a Trangia burner.

This is a Hobo stand made from a coffee can that I ended up with after much experimenting..

Later I stumbled onto a 11cm stainless mug from the Dollar store that fit over my modified GSI cup. This is my current wood/alcohol setup...

Hi

I bought this set mostly because the cans used for canned food just aren't what they used to be.
It was a struggle to find something with little (in this case) or no plastic so it could go straight in the fire.
Also got another Coleman set that's more a pot & pan, and my big issue with all of these is size, more correctly volume - reckon I need more....

On some YT video Dave Canterbury mentioned dog bowls.....and the lights went on....

I have several SS dog (water & food) bowls that's seen rough duty and just keep going, and at about 10% of the price it's a winner.
