111mm SAK's rule
on: February 14, 2015, 11:14:14 AM
I don't what it was or how it happened, but one you got me hooked onto the ubiquitous 111mm SAK.
Actually it was somewhere between when I decided I needed all three (now four) generations of The Soldier and looking for the perfect strap cutter. For a day hike I think the SAK soldier will be the first I reach for. When I started looking for something that could cut helmet straps, seatbelts and parachute lines. The original 111mm Hunter first caught my eye. Its a valuable part of my collection but will see limited use. The Hunter XS on the other hand is way more useful that it looks in the pic. The Parachutist for nostalgic purposes is one of my favourites. And the Rescue tool is now getting on-duty EDC and has been used with some success but is currently supplemented by the SwissTool Spirit X. And the cheese knife.... Have you ever tried to cut soft cheese with a regular SAK? :pok:

Im not sure I would consider the 111 series ubiquitous, certainly not as numerous as the 91MM series with 2 to 3 times as many models offered. They have however found an admirer in myself and I hope they continue to develop this line of fine tools.

Here's a thread I started last year concerning these 111's with a few pics.

I carry a 111mm Vic when on vacation or weekends.  I love the extra heft and locking blades.  I think tomorrow I will take a pic of my 111mm vics

I collect and use them occasionally. Keep a Rucksack in my EDC bag. Very capable tools. I consider them pack/bag knives but will on occasion drop one into my front overall pocket when I head to town.

Rucksack

Nomad

Forester

Which has a new Necker....

Early Hunter

Hercules (The top of the food chain 111mm IMO. Mine stay stored in bad weather/survival kits etc)

One Hand Trekker (Very capable knives. Mine stay in my Emergency/Wildfire bags)

For scale next to a 91mm Climber.

Also various thin ones like Cowboys (Philips) and Alpineers (Corkscrew)...nice to slip in a pocket.(Group pic)

Centurion

The Liner Lock models have heavier (and locking) screwdrivers....

All 111mm's have great saws

That Hercules is a damn impressive piece of hardware.  I watched a YouTube comparing it to the Wave for outdoors use.  It was no contest.
I've really got to get one of those.

I agree. It's big enough to be versatile yet still small enough to be useable....

Oh that Hunter is a wonderful tool that saved my behind on a few occasions thanks to that "gutting" blade

Are the Hercules rare? I've never seen one of those before and they look pretty cool!

I don't think so...they used to be all over the big auction site. Haven't checked lately.

I have a Trailmaster... I'm not wild about it. More of a Wenger man at this point. If it's going to be a chunky Sak it might as well be really chunky. The Wenger saw is something you could actually cut firewood with...

Kind of tempted by the Outrider... but really it's just a Huntsman with a big blade. Same size scissors etc.

That said, The Herc does have something satisfying about it... Never seen one in person.
