Which Swiss Tool?
on: July 21, 2008, 11:31:58 PM
It has probably been asked before. but I couldn't find it on the search.

If I don't get the £17 RS model  one mentioned on the other topic, I will probably go ahead and get one anyway. So the question is:

If it was your first Swiss Tool, which  model would you buy, and why?

I'd go for the X (and did) as I really do feel it has the most utility over it's sister models :)

Same here.  :)  Has everything you could possibly need IMO.  I know it lacks a serrated blade, but the PE will get you out of trouble most of the time.

I disagree.. I'd shoot for the Standard first. You can do most scissor tasks with a knife blade anyways.Plus, you can easily take along a LM Micra if you need scissors ( or a SAK-like a Climber or a Compact)..

If you have no use for a file- than I'd go for the RS. The belt cutter is the BEST rope cutting knife I have.. ( I have a ton of Spyderco's and I think the belt cutter works the best)

This post probably didn't help you much.. But, look at pictures of the RS, X, and Std. and see which one would suit you best.. Believe it or not, we can say which model we recommend-but you could finally get the tool and not like the tool assortment..

But the serrated blade offers you just that, ANOTHER blade.  At least with the X you get a completely "new" tool thrown in.

And if you are going on the logic of adding a Micra, why not carry a small file, or even a serrated blade as well then.

X.

I use scissors more than anything else. If it was up to me, all multis would come with a half-serrated blade to maximize utility. I know most people hate that design, but for dedicated knife tasks, I prefer (gasp) knives.

Well because the Micra's scissors work better than the SwissTools.  And a small file would be insufficient.. And a serrated blade would be unneeded. A Micra can even be easily slipped onto a keychain or a watch pocket in jeans and such..

But if you've got kids or work near sheeple, the scissors on the ST are a real boon :)

I was meaning the serrated to be twinned with the X.

This is where what you need in a tool comes into play.  No one tool has it all (except for the Surge before you say it LM123) but I would say if I had to chose a swisstool going along the lines that it isn't twinned with anything else, it would be the X as it covers more bases.

LOL!

Yeah, I see your point.. The X does indeed cover more bases.. But, I'd rather twin a Micra with a Standard.. But, I understand where you are coming from now..

Well I'd rather twin a SAK with everything but that's just me.  :D

Yeah, I was trying to say without adding a lot of bulk.. Hell, I'd much rather pair a Standard with a Climber.. The reason being is because you get a corkscrew, useless hook, and a back up blade..

That hook can be damn handy if you put your mind to it.  :)

I'd vote for the X as well, but I think it is neck in neck with the standard. Likely depends more on how you will use it for most people.

I know diddly about knives, but I was wondering: would it be possible to add serrations to the PE blade and make it a combo blade?

It's not ideal, but then you could have scissors, serrations and PE in one tool.

I think it is high time that Vic just added another layer though, and made a Swisstool with both the serrated blades and scissors.  Then you'd only have to choose between regular serrated or rescue blade!

I have had a good think about this and read all your good advice guys. I am going to hang around a bit to see if 7dayshop comes through with the goods. If there is no joy there I think the Standard is running favourite. I find the serrated blade  a really useful option and I cannot foresee not having any SAK with me that does not have scissors.

Thanks for your replies

If you are twinning it with a SAK then I think that is a very sensible choice.  :)

Hi Benner,

you will never see me without a SAK, except on an aircraft or somewhere else knives are banned!

On an aircraft I start twitching after about 15mins. That's what a lifetime of carrying a SAK does to you.
