GG, I don't know exactly what you mean by getting the demons out(anything to do with who let's the dogs out?), but this looks like a truck load of fun.
  >:D

demons=the smurf of everyday life.

My friend is owner/manager of a large shop, that means staff, that means more problems than any person deserves.....

Myself, I'm just a smurfing ray of sunshine, middle aged and soon to be unemployed and unemployable, life has that way of kicking you in the nuts.....

We realised that on the few trips we get to do, we always go too far on the first day, the relief to be away is so great you have that one or two or six beers too many, and then you pay the price on the second day.....

Fortunately it was cold enough to burn away (most of) the alcohol and we had a very enlightening Saturday.  My buddy fasted for 3 days after the trip and I've been beer, bread and chocolate free since then.  :salute:

I do like a weekend in the outdoors or a full day of kayaking but sometimes it's just the "small" things that does the trick. For people living in big city's this is the outdoors.. But it's my home and my everyday and I do realize how amazing it is to live like this! The great outdoors is different to everyone but this is just another Sunday to me. But to my doughter who lives here every other week and in an apartment the other week it's different.

This is where we made lunch today, right in our backyard that's the start to a forest stretching for at least 50km north and it does the same to the south with the sea to the west

Its been a little while since I've gotten a chance to get out.  Busy with work but thankful at the same time.

Nice to see y'all getting out and enjoying time with friends, family, solo, and nature.  I've got to make time here real soon.

We always, at least for the past 5 years or so, go out for several hours on New Years Day.  The trails are usually pretty empty so its nice.  We decided to take a well used mountain bike/horse trail.  There were some fresh indications horses were on the trail as well bikers and critters.   We has lots of rain so the trail was muddy in some areas and the creeks and ponds were nicely full and running.

We did about 3 hours on the trail as we also wanted to walk the beach later.  Whats nice is we can drive to the hills and back to the ocean with plenty of time left in the day.  The storms we had we awesome but left the beach with lots of debris.

My lovely partner was enjoying the camera on her 11 phone so she kept stopping to take pics.

Got again yesterday morning.  We did about 10 miles out and back with some side meandering.  I'll post up pics in a bit.  The weather was perfect as it was cool and overcast.

This morning we heard a report of a Mountain Lion attack of a 3 year old in Lake Forrest California.  Last year there was another attack of a youngin in a large group in a popular hike trail.

As we headed out as always I packed a fixed blade and my pepper spray.  The pepper spray I keep quickly accessible and my fixed blade is on my hip or pack also quickly accessible.  There is a moment when I ask myself if I am being overly cautious and after yesterdays attack I'll keep doing what I do.

We tend to hike in areas with the potential so even with a out and back hike I have always carried my fixed blade.  Yesterday I thought it would be a great time to carry my Contego.  I think l'll continue to carry this on my hikes.  While I hope to never ever engage with any creature its a bit of a comfort along with my pepper spray.

There is some video available of the Mountain Lion who scurried up a tree.

Back to our hike.  It was such a great day out and I have to also mention we crossed a decently flowing creek.  My socks got a little wet but being wool I was not bothered one bit.  This is my first time I've gotten wet but its nice to know they provided continued warmth even a bit wet.

Does constant brushing of snow off the truck count?

If so, I had 3 days in a row  :dunno:

Would a big stick be a good option? I would be hoping to scare it off before it gets close enough to stab with a blade.

Given how they attack, from behind and quietly, if attacked you will be in a fight.  They say if you see a mountain lion then its usually too late.  There have been a few incidents that were posted about people encountering them on the trail and yelling and waving their arms scared it away.  The attacks recently here however seemed to be mountain lions with no fear of humans.

I carry a hiking pole but the stalk and pounce so not sure how much it'd do.  I hope to never encounter one, ever.  I also never hike alone so I am hoping two adults could be a deterrent to a mountain lion.   Dogs on the other hand can be dealt with by pepper spray or my hiking pole for the most part.  When we get out far enough some people let their dogs of leash so we never take chances their dogs will behave.  We've not had trouble but we been ran up on by off leash dogs.

Unfortunately yesterday there a few dog incidents of dogs lunging and misbehaving at passer byes and other dogs.  We were watching from the bench we sat at for lunch near our car.

Truth is we have a higher chance at a fatal car crash than being killed by a mountain lion but just as I wear my seat belt I'll continue to carry a large fixed blade and pepper spray.
