Wax finish for handles
on: February 25, 2015, 09:52:09 PM
I’ve wanted to make my own axe handle treatment for some time so I ordered some bees wax and turpentine to go with my linseed oil,

A mix of three equal parts, I used the little jar to guess how much wax to add

Melt the wax in a saucepan (probably should have used a double boiler thingy) then stir in the liquids

Warm your glass jars before poring the hot wax in, I’m just like Jamie Oliver with an Axe fetish   ;)

Yep that seems to work well :tu:

Try adding some tar to the mix. It gives little darker finish, and great smell.

Its very easy to do Mate, I used the little jar to get the liquids equal and guessed the wax, just took half an hour  :tu:

Juat a couple drops give great smell, and will not affect color.  I have mix of turpentine and cotton oil. Works ok for my needs.

But that looks truly great. I will have to try your recipe sometime.

Yes, Pine tar. It is quite common here in Finland. It can be bought hardwarestore close by me. You could try boat stores, tar is used to coat wooden boats.

Tar has some other functions aswell. You can make soap out of it, and it can heal and sanitize wounds and sore muscles etc.

The problem with bees wax is that it's very soft and wears quickly. You could enhance the durability of your home made wax by adding some carnauba wax.It will blend well with your current formula. It also can be used on your leather products.

I would say so. You need to be careful with amount you put in. Just a few drops will do on that amount of wax. Too much, and it might go sticky. Call me weird, but i love smell of tar in reasonable amounts.

That tar has good rust proof features. You can use it for car tire bolts for example.

Well, i bet it will turn beautiful dark color. You just need to try how much to use it to get needed results.

You know, you could put that glass jar in kettle with water. That way you dont boil it so easy.

You have so much tar there, so you could try this.

Pine tar salve.

1/4 cup of sunflower oil
1-2 teaspoon beewax
1/2 teaspoon tar
1/4 teaspoon activated charcoal (not necessity)

Or easy way

Mix few drops in white vaseline.

These are great for dry hands and scalp, small wounds, sore muscles, lip balm etc... Real snake oil :D

I have used the plain wax on both axe handles here and and tried out the two waxes on a hickory handle to compare the colours
