Ideal SAK
on: February 26, 2015, 10:00:32 AM
What's your ideal tool loadout, scale material and colour?
I'd want the tool loadout (but not size) from the 111mm Outrider minus back tools but sandwiched between red pioneer alox (93mm?) With the inline awl. I particularly want the inline long phillips from the 111mm that nests under the scissors not the stubby one.Anyone know if it's possible. So basically a red farmer with the scissors and phillips layer from 111mm.

What's yours?

My favorite SAK is the CT41 but I treat mine as a queen as they're hard to replace. I therefore find the Swiss Champ my SAK of choice and have a couple that I use throughout the day - one at my desk and one in a belt sheath.

A tempting mod would be to ditch the fish scales in favor of an electrician's blade. Then it would be nearly perfect...

I have no single ideal SAK, as my days and mood vary, and I love carrying different knives if only for variety's own sake. That said, I'd seriously love a Spartan with a fish scaler added. A nice, straightforward SAK with an added probe without sharp edges. Oh, and nylon scales.

My ideal Sak would be:

111mm.
Tool set of the Outrider
One Hand Opening
Blade Design of the Delemont Rangergrip series
Lock design of the Delemont Rangergrip series
Plus Scales

I would even take a One Hand Trekker with plus scales and scissors and inline phillips and not complain.
I like the Blade and Lock on the Rangergrip better though.

Edit: If we are getting crazy I guess I would also like a Farmer with scissors and for them to put tweezers and a pen in the scales of the Alox.

Three layer 93mm Alox scales, with the following :
L1: large blade and combo tool
L2: scissors
L3: wood saw

Basically, I want a 3 layer version of the compact with an added saw and Alox scales.

58mm--MiniChamp. I normally dislike 58mm, but this has everything I need in a small package.

74mm--Executive

84mm--I wish they'd bring back the Master Craftsman Small. At present, I really want a Lumberjack/Walker, but with a Phillips and awl on the back.

91mm--Craftsman.  Perfect would be a modified SwissChamp, replacing the in-line Phillips with the flashlight, and replacing the corkscrew with the backside Phillips.  Or maybe replace the entire mag/Phillips layer with the electrician's blades layer (hawkbill and sheepsfoot), as I never need the mag lens in the field.  These would be great extra features to have.  I guess why Vic replaced (instead of supplemented) the fish scaler on the post '87 Craftsmans with the pliers was it was too close to being a SwissChamp (only short the mag/Phillips layer).

100mm--Bring back a carbon steel (preferably 1095) version of the older Soldiers.

The Locksmith is perfect for me in 111mm. And not being OHO is actually better, that big Spydie-style hole gets in the way when using the screwdriver tip of the can opener.   Just had that happen to me with the Soldier today.

Currently, I wish they'd modify the Delemont Junior 9 to have a regular, not blunt tip blade and maybe give it the combo tool in place of the pen blade.  A locking large blade, pen blade (nonlocking, of course) woodsaw, and Phillips is really all I need for 3/4ths of what I do.

Currently, the Craftsman has all I need, and that's it. No other tools I rarely (if ever) have a use for.  Though having the fish scaler for the ruler and hook disgorger, and the electirician's blade layer would be nice.   I keep looking at the CT41 though because of the bit driver.

Im partial to the plain old Spartan. My main carry one has ruby scales, and a mini screwdriver. Im about to build a passenger with I hope will be about the best of all worlds. However I always seem to go back to the Spartan.

I have been thinking about this too much lately... about the holy grail. There are two sizes of interest for different uses...

93mm - explorer plus or s557 variant

Lock blade (Wenger design)
Nail file and cleaner (small)
Scissors (Vic)
Pliers (Vic)
In line philips
Strong inline light
Bottle opener-screwdriver
Can opener-screwdriver
Awl
Corkscrew + mini screwdriver
Toothpick
Tweezers
Pen
Pin

111mm - trekker variant

One opening liner lock blade with sharp tip
Bottle opener/prybar/screwdriver with liner lock
Can opener-screwdriver
Scissors + in line philips
Awl
Corkscrew + mini screwdriver
Toothpick
Tweezers
Pen
Pin

Both I will take in alox or wood if the scale tools are included - otherwise happy with any colour scales with a bias to the fluro yellow.

Swisschamp  :tu:
I could do without the fish scaler and I would like a (true) sheepfoot mainblade and a small serrated blunt nosed hawkbill.
Replace the can opener with the awl found on the alox models.
Handle scales of red, heat resistant G10 still containing t&t and pen.
Now that would be one heck of a Champ

58 mm - Midnight Manager with nail cleaner (can't see why this was never made)
91 mm - Evogrip 16 layout in 91mm, but with Vic scissors and pin and pen

Linerlock WorkChamp with sturdier openers :gimme: Probably not happenning soon due to design issues.

Alox Huntsman (maybe with small hawkbill blade instead of can opener )

Actually, my Vic Handyman with nylon scales is almost my ideal SAK.
