Pin Hole?
on: July 23, 2008, 06:46:40 AM
I was fooling around with my tinker, you know, sharpening with my viking whetstone, cutting myself in general, buidling my new desktop...

When I noticed a slot for a straight pin under the philips head.

Was it always there? When did this happen? More importantly, why do they have this slot, but no pin?!

Apparently all newer scales have that hole, but only plus model have pin already equipped.

I was shocked the first time I heard about the pin holes and actually found them hidden under all my corkscrews. I couldn't believe I had never noticed them before...

Why would they produce the regular scales with an unused pinhole? =|

Why do men have nipples? I think it's basically the same reason. Easier manufacturing...  ;)

Well, sure, manufacturing, but the nipples are old and unused.

Whereas, these pin holes are new!
And wait, it's not easier or harder to manufacture the scales with pin holes, I suspect.

I imagine it's just a little bonus, and since it doesn't cost them anything, why not include it?

Sure, then you can buy the replacement pin for a dollar. =S

I need to go buy a pack of pins now so all my newer SAKs can have the added feature.

It could just be that one of the scales was a ''plus'' and the other was a ''regular'' scale, I had the same thing on one of my Camper :)

Are their SAKs without a pin hole then?

I just assumed that most SAKs had the pin hole like mine do, but that only the plus scale versions actually included the pin...

All my old saks lack the pin hole. I have a 2006 SAK Sportsman II in clam packaging and I know that doens't have a pin hole. The plus scales are pen + pin, these tinkers I have with the pin hole I bought last year, I believe. So it may have been produced 2006 or 2007. A pin hole and no pin, no pen hole. =S

I don't have many SAKs, but my Explorer with the old style magnifying glass also has a pin hole and no pen hole. Anyone know when they stopped making the old style magnifying glasses?

There is a wave of strange things going on around the world it seems that there are little "fairies" that sneak into your house at night (or while you are asleep) and drill pin holes in SAK scales.  :D

Don't feel bad I wanted this Champion for a long time and admired it at the store even took it out of the display and played with it.

Later my wife went to the store and asked the clerk (a friend of ours) which knife I have been admiring he pointed out the Champion which she then in turn bought it for me.

After several weeks of owning it I discovered the pin hole and worse it there was a pin in it and I never even saw it for several weeks.    You see there are bigger idiots out there don't feel bad. :ahhh

It seems the best guess is that they started including pin holes on both types of scales around 2006-2007 then...?

Welcome to the forum One Lame Frog :salute: :D

My Super Tinker has the pin hole so I just figured that they came with the hole ::) I just found a pin and put it in myself :) Never really crossed my mind  why it didn't have a pin  :D but I did wonder if that was really what it was for since mine doesn't have plus scales :D

On Sosak I asked the question why didn't Vic put plus scales on all the 91mm models?

Tim (Felinevet) said that a lot of people specifically don't want plus scales. However i seem to remember that a lot of the Sosakers were in favour of plus scales with all the knives.

I know some people don't like the pen. I think that is why they don't like the plus scales.

It is funny. I read this thread as I just opened a package from SwissBianco with 2 Yeoman Mechanics with translucent ruby plus scales and one was missing the pin. LOL! I had a spare in my parts box. I did notice something else interesting. On the plus side there is a slot for the pen and and one for the pin as expected. But there is another slot that goes off at an angle to the other end of the knife. There is no external slot for a tool. Any clues??

I think Bill used that slot once to put in an addition set of modded tweezers.  If I can find the pics I'll post them here.

as you can see it's ground down shorter to fit in the smaller/diagonal slot.
and it was made pointy.

If you want pointy tweezers on a Wenger,  just swap in the ones made for the Minathor.

I have replaced the tweezers in several of my Wengers with these.

(this place has LOTS of stuff that works with the Minathor, they sell watch repair supplies)
