Evil's EDKey.....
on: March 12, 2015, 12:26:42 PM
Hey there, gang. Thought I would share a project I did a while back. On most days, I like to keep my keys to a minimum and look good while doing it. I've made a few versions in the past, but, this is the one that best suits me. I made an earlier version that was double ended, keys on both sides. Worked great but very bulky and had to pick out keys. Next version, was also double ended but with shaved keys. Little less bulky but still not getting along with it. Next version was wider, single sided, closed design with a bottom. Also worked great but still had to pick out keys. Older versions had pocket clips. Shoulder strap for my EDC bag has a D-ring right below shoulder level, which is where I like to keep my keys if not clipped to my pants. So what I ended up with is a single sided open design with a carabiner. This was the only design that allowed me to access my keys with one hand, which was important to me since most of the time one hand is always covered with either paint or grease. The carbon fiber/red theme matches my urban companion project as well as an upcoming project.....

*Carbon fiber scales
*Phosphor bronze washers
*Hardened, heat treated pivots

I'm looking for a way to do the same to my keys, but I have a big problem: my house key is one of those telescopic models.

It shrinks to half the size when not in use but is almost the width of two "normal" Yale-like keys...

Totally radical.

The CF and Red REALLY pop!!

You can see some differences between a true MT engineer and a redneck from Florida's key flips lol

Did you order the CF and shape and cut to fit? Or did CF sak scales work?

I gotta say, I've never seen a key or lock like that... interesting

Thank you, NKlamerus. As long as what you create works for you, that is all that counts. I keep changing things until they finally meet my needs. I cut and shape my own carbon fiber scales. Never even knew any sak's came stock with CF and even if they did, I doubt the size would have matched.....

Apart from the lovely Key-Keeper I do like your bracelet with the woven-in hex nuts.

Thank you, lowtech. It is my version of the one floating around on the internet. Everyone seems to use 5/16 nuts, I use 1/4. Most use the full cord, this one is gutted. Also, my start and end knots are different as is the way I add the second color. I wanted it as thin as possible.....

Nice :tu: LOVE the red/black! I'm guessing you can get away with not shaving the keys down?

Thank you, MadPlumberman. Sure, if I didn't mind the head of the keys sticking out. My first version used full sized keys. I wanted this one as slim as possible. One hand opening was also a part of the reason I made this version. Once I get around to making another set of spares for all of my keys, I will end up replacing the keys in this one. For the new keys I will be making little staggered levers which will make one hand opening even easier. Another reason for this creation was to match his brother.....

Thank you, ducttapetech. While not exactly twins they are directly related. Their scales were cut from the exact same piece of carbon fiber despite being made years apart from one another.....

It's ok, no biggie. Nice job on the sak, I did a pair of carbon fibers like 10yrs back, sucks that one of the scales fell off and I never found it :( so the pair just sit for display, of course the one with the missing a scale good side up, lol..

Great job on those scales. Sucks that you never found the missing scale. I can relate. I have parts of incomplete projects, as well as complete multitools, missing in action.....

Thanks, it sucks doesn't it, it's like you can just picture it right there, over on the table, or on top of the dresser, as if you just saw it the other day, but no such luck and we're talking years ago, lol!
