I bough a Pioneer back when I was new to SAKs. It was my EDC for quite a while. Even had my name engraved on it...
Then, I discovered the Farmer. I didn't even know those existed or I would have gotten that instead of the Pioneer!
Well, now that I EDC a Craftsman and prefer the tool set on those larger, multi-layer SAKs, I'm afraid I can't justify getting a Farmer. I've wanted one for years, but I don't think I'd carry it now. Is there any real point to getting one if it may never see use?
I don't consider myself a collector; I'm a user.

Oh, one other thought/question. When I think of survival, I think of shelter building and the necessity of a saw. Anyone else wonder why the US military didn't include a saw in their knives. I'm disappointed with that. I'm sure there were patents to consider, etc but the USGI pocket knives just seem so inferior to the Victorinox. I have a Camillus GI "camp knife". This is a pic of the type I have.

Anyone else disappointed with the US government's offering?

I've been preferring the farmer lately.  I hardly ever carry more than three layers, and even three layer cellidors are pushing it as far as thickness for me.

I didn't get the Farmer at first but now I'm diggin it   :tu:

Get one, TY! You don't always want to carry that thick craftsman just for a saw :D

The Victorinox 1961 model Soldier knife, which was made until 2007, had the same tools as the Camilus U.S. knife, and no saw. So...

Also, I have a Farmer with plain silver alox scales. It is the knife i probably have least actualy NEED for, and yet, I simply can't part with it, because it is a beautiful beast, somehow seeming smaller than the 91mm Camper, but MUCH heavier built.

During my long time ago active duty in the Dutch Air Force I had an Amefa DAK, which was a copy of the Vx Pioneer. Later on I bought some Pioneers for EDC'ing, but in fact never carried them because I liked the fancier cellidor knives much more.

And a Farmer..??? Pfff, what a waist of money! BUT... inspired by Ron Who's thread "MTo Farmer -- anyone interested?", I took a closer look on the Farmer and last week I decided to buy one. A brand new specimen costs around € 24 so no big loss if it would turn out that I didn't like it. To make a long story short: I was wrong by ignoring for almost 40 years this beautiful, extremely well build and very useful pocket knife!! So glad I have one. It's a perfect knife for EDC and also for outdoor activities, especially in countries where OHO or locked blades (such as Germany) are forbidden.

Resurrecting this thread to introduce Crimson Jack. A fine gift from St Nix that will reside in my EDC for some time

Thanks Nix

ps the Farmer came with a lovely lanyard and bead but that has already been purloined by my better half.  :D

I'm thinking the Farmer will be my EDC from now on. After many years of carrying all sorts of SAK's I realise the Farmer has all the tools I 'need' and none of the tools I don't. I have a Rambler for the scissors and if I need a mag or philips there will always be a Swisschamp, Woodsman or Pikachu nearby to grab.

Of course, being a Gemini, all this may change with the wind but for today my EDC is the Farmer.

Coincidentally I just got my hands on a red Farmer as well, though not quite so shiny and new as yours Mags.  :D

Looks like you've cleaned it up nicely though G-Man - will you keep the blade as is or replace it? Lovely scales BTW
