My flea market finds
on: July 25, 2008, 04:55:32 AM
A few weeks ago, I was browsing a local flea market and came across this little gem.
An original Leatherman tool. It had some minor surface rust and the implements were stuck together.
An afternoon with some dish soap and an old tooth brush and it looks as good as new.  I blew out all the dirt in the crevices and gave it a slather of light oil.  I worked the implements (open & closed) for a while and it now works as it should. I toweled off the access oil and gave a polish with some stainless cleaner.
I guess it was $3 well spent.

Excellent find! :multi: $3 you said? Damn, you pretty much stole that thing!!! Cheaper than a gallon of gas! I may have to hit some of the flea markets around here to see what tools I can get into.

This afternoon, I answered an ad on craigslist for a used Leatherman for sale.
It was a PST II.  This one was also full of saw dust and pocket lint.  It had some gummy residue on the pliers and implements.  I washed it with dish soap and my trusty tooth brush.  This one also received a coating of light oil and here is what it looks like.
This one cost me $15.

I love flea markets but rarely walk away with something cool.

Yeah, finds like this don't come along too often.  The $3 leatherman was at the third to the last table I visited.  I was bummed that I walked around for an hour and a half and found nothing.  It almost got away from me but the dull stainless caught my eye.

It's a good start to a collection of every Leatherman MT out there!! Have you ever thought about starting a collection to see how many different models you can get?

I know a man who still uses his PST everyday. He has used it so much, the ruler markings on the outside are almost smooth, and the knife you can tell has been ran through many sharpenings, but he still refuses to retire it for a new tool.

I've only recently got the bug for collecting leathermans.  I found this site and my admiration for them has just snowballed.
I visited the same flea market a few months back and saw brand new, still in the original package, Super Tool.  The guy wanted $40 and I thought it was too pricey.  I kick myself for not at least making him an offer on it.

They are only in it for the money. I guarantee had you told him all you have is $25, he would have taken it, because he is sure there is no one else who would buy it at that price, but he is hoping some sucker will come along and do it though.

I've bought most of my leathermans this way.  My first was an original Wave.  I found it many years back at the same flea market for only $30 new in the package.  If I can all avoid it, I will wait to find it below retail at a swap meet, flea market, pawn shop, or Ebay.  My dad's EDC was an original Super tool he found at a pawn shop for $10.
My original wave was my EDC until I got my Surge.  I'm keeping my eyes open for a Skeletool.

Looks like you got a couple great steals there Arrowhead! 8)

While you're browsing the aisles, don't forget to keep a watch out for old Gerber tools too, and old Swiss Army Knives. They can often be had really cheap and are interesting adds to the collection.

Ahh, good old heavy-duty cast metal construction. I love it. Much better than lightweight plastic stuff. :)

Its a bit out the ark.  The seal on the base needs replacing so at the moment if you pocket it you end up with petrol burn :(

I need to have a look see if I can figure out the make.
