Knife modification
on: May 19, 2015, 12:35:19 AM
I attempted a search, but I'm terrible with computers.  I have an old Wenger Delemont (over 25 yrs old) and a brand new Wenger EvoGrip S557.  I'd like to replace the broken scissors in my old knife with the slip joint pliers from my new knife as well as repair the open/close/lock action of the old knife.  Is this a realistic venture?  What is the proper rivet used?  Can rivets be purchased or do they have to be custom made?
I can and have modified almost everything I've ever owned, just need a bit of help with this.

Thank you!

First, welcome to the forums!

Sorry to say  Ican't help, but I'm sure one of our expert modders will be along shortly to help you out.

Good luck on your project, and feel free to post the results when you're done.

Welcome, bro  :waving:

It's more than realistic venture, it's easy and enjoyable :D
First of all:
I hope you won't dismantle The s557 for pliers and lock :o :pok: >:D :D
You can get a Wenger with both pliers & lock quite cheap on ebay. Or two Wengers, one with pliers (Wenger Tradesman or Journeyman $15 max) and one 2 or 3-layer with locking mechanism (few bucks or let's say $10 max).
That said, we can proceed with details of your interest :D

Here is just what you need :D

;)

Wenger uses 2.5mm brass rivets - all four are the same. They are easy to find (ebay and so on).
If you will use the old Wenger scales with those three protrusions on both liners and scales (see photo below), then you can simply just peening the ends over.

You have to pay attention when peening - not to damage those protrusions on liners, as they holds scales.
And here are some close up shots of locking mechanism:

Yes you can, just do it :D

Thank you for the greets Lynn and Caranthanus!
And thank you for info sharing regarding my inquiry Caranthanus.  I read elsewhere that the head of the rivets on the S557 can be carefully drilled and removed as they are reused by merely sending the appropriate sized brass rod back through when finished and peening them over the heads.
I purchased 1/8" brass rod at the local hardware store as I recalled using the same size roll pin as a repair earlier but will have to measure to be sure.
I haven't yet decided which scales I will use.  I really like the old school finish of ole' reliable however there are no slots for pick or tweezers.....
I am not bothered at all by dismantling my 557 as I have only purchased one SAK in 25 yrs I believe that I will be plenty happy with my mods.
I try to be a minimalist when it comes to gadgets, vehicles, camping, etc,  so I will do everything in my power to carry the least amount of gear as possible.
Again, many thanks for your assistance, now if I only had the time............:)

and I just noticed that you had added pliers to your oldy, looks great!
