The First Nations people of North America used to do something similar to cook large amounts of food in large wooden pots.  Because they couldn't put wood  pots on the fire they would heat rocks in the fire and drop them in the wood pots to cook the contents.

I never thought of doing that for wet boots/shoes.

I'd seen that method taught by Mr Mears but never thought about using it for anything else :)

It reminds me of my college days. I was with my friends at a ski lodge. One of guys came with his brand new boots from the slope and put them on top of the terracotta stove to dry them out... in the morning the soles were melted... all of the rubber looked like black string cheese ...

Nice method.

Someone whom has charcoal or Zippo handwarmer can use it to dry boots. Makes it useful all year.
